At Hanawalt, we have already completed fire and tornado drills. We will continue with drills throughout the year. The purpose of any type of school drill is to prepare all students and adults with the knowledge they need to quickly make their way to safety in the event of an emergency situation. These drills play an important role in training school staff to know in advance their responsibilities so they can take the lead in an emergency.

Drop Off and Pick Up

During drop off, please drive down to 51st Street. Do not turn around on Robertson Drive, 56th Street, or turnaround in the parking lot. It is not safe. By following the flow of traffic, all people remain safe.

Fall Clubs for Second - Fifth Grade

The excitement is here! We are starting clubs tomorrow. Second - Fifth graders picked their top three clubs and were assigned one club. Some of the clubs include basketball, bracelet making, soccer, science experiments, coloring, and many others. We will have clubs once a month for 45 minutes on Friday (1:45 - 2:30pm). We will switch clubs in February.

If a change needs to be made to a dismissal plan for your child(ren), call the office before 2:00 pm. Please do not email teachers or administration with these changes. We cannot guarantee that email will be read before dismissal time.

Parents are asked to assist with dismissal procedures by making certain that children are clear about dismissal plans before they enter school each morning.

Registering for OneRun

The 3rd annual District-wide OneRun fundraiser will be held at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden on Saturday, September 24th, with check-in between 8:00-8:45 a.m. The event is a 2-mile fun run/walk with an option to cheer on the sidelines as a supporter! Registration is free for everyone; participation is what will count.

Event fees will be paid by corporate and individual sponsors. Once participation totals are tallied, the money raised will be sent directly to the schools. Each participant may designate one school. The more participants and donations, the more money to the schools!
