PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGES
Dear Parents and Care Givers
ASCENSION DAY LITURGY
Yesterday, Thursday 18 May, we celebrated the Feast of the Ascension. This feast commemorates Jesus' ascension into heaven 40 days after his resurrection. Thus, Ascension Day falls 40 days after Easter, on the 6th Thursday of Easter.
As Christians, we believe that after Jesus rose from the dead, Jesus left the Earth by being taken up, body and soul, to Heaven to re-join God the Father.
Although Christ was no longer with his apostles he did teach them to spread the Good News. He also taught that we are never alone and that He is always with us, in our hearts, in our minds and on our lips.
2024 ENROLMENT INTERVIEWS ARE HAPPENING NOW!
Do not forget to enrol younger siblings for 2024! We are conducting enrolment interviews now.
Please lodge an Application for Admission form without delay and schedule an enrolment interview as soon as possible!
ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL - SICKNESS
A friendly reminder to parents to please only send your child to school if they are well and healthy. If your child is not well, you are requested to keep them home until they are better and not likely to spread the illness to others. This is very important for the sick child so that they rest when they are sick and hence get over their illness faster but also very important for their peers and staff so illness does not spread to others. We have a number of children and staff in the school who have compromised immune systems or who have immediate family members who do and if they get sick, they get 'very, very sick' and they take a lot longer to recover.
We know that sick children can affect your work responsibilities, but the health of all of our community members - students, parents, staff and their families is of the utmost importance! We thank you for your cooperation in helping keep each other healthy and happy.
TRAFFIC - SAFE SPEED
A reminder to all drivers to please ensure that you drive to the sign posted speed limits. We have had a number of concerned residents contact our school advising us of some people speeding through the school zones. To ensure the safety of everyone - particularly our children, please drive carefully and do not speed, we do not want an accident to occur. If you are running late, do not speed, we want your children and you to arrive safely and we do not want anyone else hurt either.
We understand that it is a long school zone between our school and Dayton Primary School, but please for the safety of all children and community members please drive safely and lawfully.
Remember - 40 km/hr on Arthur Street between 7:30 am - 9:00 am and 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
on the school grounds 10 km/hr
The City of Swan have been made aware of this issue as have the local police!
CODE OF CONDUCT
The best way to protect children everywhere – including beyond the school gates – is to teach them to choose healthy relationships based upon modelling what those relationships look like.
The Code of Conduct describes healthy relationships.
Last term I mentioned that we would look at the Code of Conduct over the first few weeks of this term. There are 12 statements in our Code of Conduct that describe minimum standards of conduct in all behaviour and decision making to ensure the safety and well-being of our students. We will look at 3 statements per newsletter.
THE CONDUCT STATEMENTS
1. You act safely and competently.
- Putting the safety of all students ahead of every other relevant but secondary consideration, performing our roles professionally, students and parents receiving accurate information, informing the Principal of any relevant information in regards to maintaining student safety and well-being (this can be in regards to people’s behaviour, maintenance issues etc), referring students to appropriate experts if a student requires skills and experience outside our core competencies.
2. You give priority to students’ safety and well-being in all your behaviour and decision making.
- All decisions and actions taken need to ensure the safety and well-being of the students as the primary focus, we all respectfully communicate in plain language and in a way that all understand, ensure that the student has a voice, we recognise the importance of the students education – being to class on time, limit family vacations throughout the school term, parents are not to take action for their children by means of solving issues by approaching other students or other parents – a need to follow due process is required.
3. You act in accordance with the values of the Gospel as defined in the Code of Ethical Conduct.
- All stakeholders keep the Gospel values at the forefront of all decision making, that we all strive to live out our relationships with all stakeholders in the school in a manner that is based on gospel values, respect and dignity for each person, commitment to building and fostering welcoming and positive relationships, confidentiality – we don’t speak about others, being held accountable for our actions.
In the picture below - do you see an old lady or a young lady? The picture reminds us that there are two ways of seeing things. In this case how do you see our Code of Conduct?
Is it a waste of time, or is it our greatest gift to child safety and wellbeing? Is it political correctness gone mad or is it common sense? Is it an invitation for parent complaints or is it an invitation for staff/parent expectations? I’m sure that the questions go on.
Also note that the Code of Conduct is also on our school website.
MOTHER'S DAY CELEBRATIONS AT EMMAUS CPS
Last Friday we held our first Mother’s Day breakfast! As for any event we were not too sure of what our attendance would be like. To say I was overwhelmed with the attendance would be an understatement.
What a wonderful way to start a Friday. I would like to thank all our mums and grandmothers who attended. It was so good to see you all.
I would also like to thank the many staff members who cooked and prepared for the breakfast. You are such a beautiful group of people, and we are so fortunate to have you all at Emmaus CPS.
We finished the morning celebrations with a moving Liturgy for our mums and grandmothers. Again, the number of people that stayed behind to attend the liturgy was fantastic. Many thanks to Mrs Hackner for preparing the Liturgy for us.
Many of our Mothers and Grandmothers were touched by the Liturgy. One common comment related to the final song sung by the students with accompanying actions. It was certainly hard to hold back tears (for the women!) watching our students sing the words with immense gratitude to their motherly figures. We had a few requests for the name of the song, hence, here is the link to 'More Than Enough' (by Shawna Edwards). For those who missed it, perhaps invite your child to sing along with the actions: More Than Enough:Shawna Edwards
NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME
This coming Wednesday 24 May we will be celebrating the National Simultaneous Storytime, (NSS). This is an annual Australia-wide group reading and literacy event, where schools, libraries and other institutions gather school-age children together to read the same chosen picture book at the same time.
The Speedy Sloth is instantly loveable with strong rhyming for read aloud joy, and a terrific, inclusive message about running your own race.
It was finally time for the event of the year, Spike couldn’t believe it—THE GREAT RACE was here! The other sloths said it couldn’t be done, but Spike didn’t care, she was ready to run!
I am looking forward to reading this book to our Year 1 and 2 classes on the day.

THIS WEEK WE HAD OUR FIRST WELLNESS CHECKPOINT
Wellness Checkpoints are our way of checking in with the students and developing in them, the skills to look after their wellbeing. This week our focus was in the area of Social Interaction. It is important to build strong and healthy relationships in order to develop a sense of Wellness. The students, led by the Year Fives, listened to the story It’s Great to Work Together and worked in small groups with a buddy class, focusing on good teamwork, to create a tower using marshmallows and skewers. It was a very sticky afternoon!
