NEWS AND HEADLINES
Mid-Penn Capital Division 2020-’21 wrestling preview, predictions and preseason wrestler of the year
Middletown
Head coach: Daniel Riggs. 2019-’20 record: 12-5. Key returning wrestlers: So. Isaac Lupp (145/152), Jr. Vincent Corradi (160), So. Sebastian Dash (215/285). Key losses: Luke Fegley (126/132/138), Zach Malay (113/120/126), Joey Spear (138/145/152), Arthur Dash (195/220), Quincy Reinnagel (220/285). Newcomers to watch: Caden Paul (126/132/138), Canden Brown (172), Tillman Artell (106), Chance Sweeney (113), Dominic Singh (172).
The cycle starts anew for Middletown and coach Daniel Riggs following the losses of longtime anchors Luke Fegley, Zach Malay, Joey Spear, Arthur Dash and Quincy Reinnagel from a team that qualified for the District 3 team tournament a year ago. The Blue Raiders will start a new youth movement that has the same look and feel as it did when that group of seniors first made their way through the system.
This season is full of new challenges and Middletown is lighter on numbers because of COVID-related losses, but Riggs said he’s excited to work with kids who bring a new energy to the room. The expectation is to carry about 18 wrestlers through the first week of the year with experience in the middle and top of the lineup and young talent at the bottom.
“We’re going to be very young with a lot of freshmen and sophomores this year,” Riggs said. “I’m excited about it. The coaching staff is excited with the new faces and new energy on the team. It kind of reminds me of when last year’s team started out as freshmen. Guys are hungry and working hard in the room.”
Middletown sent seven wrestlers to the District 3 tournament last season and finished eighth in the team standings there behind the veteran group that just departed. Those losses are going to show up in the lineup that Riggs puts together in the unprecedented situation of the 2020 season, but the focus will be on developing his young team.
The Blue Raiders will usher in a youth movement behind guys like Caden Paul (126/132/138), Canden Brown (172), Tillman Artell (106), Chance Sweeney (113) and Dominic Singh (172). Early in the process, they’ve shown Riggs that they are ready to work, compete and develop in much the same way that Fegley, Spear and last year’s senior class did.
“We’re young, but I think we have talent,” Riggs said.

Mid-Penn Capital Division girls basketball:
Middletown
Coach: LaSonda Dixon
2019-20 record: 5-16, 4-8 division
Key players: Mikayla Clagget, jr. PG; Amanda Lee, sr. SG; Christine Miller, so. G; Peyton Attivo, fr. F.
Buzz: So it’s time for the post-Fitzpatrick era to begin at Middletown. Yes, it will be a tall task to replace Kate Fitzpatrick’s production on a nightly basis, but while the program’s all-time leading scorer is off to college, Dixon begins her run as head coach with a small class of veterans and promising rookies. Clagget banked 72 steals and snared 90 rebounds a season ago while Lee pitched in 85 boards. Attivo and Miller, meanwhile, enter with big expectations at both ends of the court.

Mid-Penn Capital Division boys basketball:
Middletown
Coach: Chris Bradford
2019-20 record: 7-14
Key players: Taj Broadie, jr. F; Tony Powell, jr. F; Ty’mir Jackson, sr. G; TJ Daniels, sr. G; Tate Leach, jr. G; Brock Welsh, sr. F; Derek Wall, sr. F; Julio Rodriguez, sr. G/F; Tyson Leach, fr. G; Bamm Appleby, so. G/F
Buzz: It wasn’t the season the Blue Raiders were hoping for last year, but they’re coming into the 2021 campaign loaded up with experience now. The team graduated just two players last year and will come back with largely the same group that started in the 2019-20 season. That five will be led by the imposing forward tandem of juniors Taj Broadie, standing 6-foot-5, and Tony Powell, standing 6-foot-4, who will be matchup nightmares for most opponents. The team will also be boosted by experience at the guard positions with seniors Ty’mir Jackson and TJ Daniels joining junior Tate Leach in the starting five for the team.

What makes a good teammate? Multiple reasons!
Here is a great quote by Kobe Bryant that can help sum it up:
"I'll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it's sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot."
The Blue Raiders instill the following leadership qualities P,R,I,D,E. When nominating a fellow Blue Raider, please list one of these qualities in your description.
P-erseverance, R-espect, I-ntegrity, D-iscipline, E-xcellence
