Measuring What Matters: Student Engagement in Our Classrooms
In Lombard District 44, we frequently share that we are committed to measuring the success of our students in other ways outside of a test score. But what exactly are we looking at to determine how our students are progressing? How do we know we are meeting their individual needs?
On Monday, 47 staff members from across all of our elementary buildings and Glenn Westlake Middle School will begin using a new tool called the Wellington Student Engagement Index. This tool provides real-time feedback straight from our students to our teachers about the level of engagement they are experiencing in their classroom.
Research has shown that when students are engaged in their learning, it increases their attention and focus, motivates them to practice higher-level critical thinking skills, and promotes meaningful learning experiences.
To learn more about this, we encourage you to watch the video below, which quickly helps explain what this tool is and how we will be using it.
Overall, the goal is to hear from our students throughout this school year and use their feedback to improve their classroom experiences. They are the experts in deciding how engaged they are in their learning, and this tool provides our teachers with a quick and easy way to learn their thoughts.
And while this certainly is not the only way in which we seek to measure the progress of our students, we are excited about this new opportunity.
