KTS Newsletter
Term 4, Week 4, Tuesday 8 November 2022
Coming up...
A warm welcome to Zainah, who started in Room 5 this week.
We have had a very busy time with various sports events on, and they continue. After many weeks of practice, it was good to have our Athletics Day for Year 4–8 students today. Going to a stadium always gives mana to the work the students have undertaken. A very special thank you to Rachel Ogilvy for organising such a big school event.
Healthy eating
We are noticing a huge number of sweet/chocolate wrappers in the school and have had senior students eating gum. Food loaded with sugar such as sweets and chocolate is not desirable at school both in terms of maximising learning potential as well as the rubbish in our environment.
As a school, we promote a healthy food and drink culture (refer to our Food and Nutrition policy via the school website, username ‘kts’, password ‘passion’) – we respectfully request that sweets, chocolate and gum be excluded from school lunches and saved for outside school hours.
With just 6 weeks until the end of the year it is a busy time ahead for all of us. Keep an eye on the calendar and the website for up-to-date information. Our next big school event for students and the community is our International Night Thursday 1st December. This is a fantastic early evening with all students set to perform at some stage. Micaela and Rachel have been working on year group musical performances, the various Jump Jam and cultural groups are all set to perform, and of course the kapa haka should never be missed. There will be delicious food to purchase and a chance to connect with each other as a school community.
Curriculum Update - Health Curriculum Consultation
Every two years the Board of Trustees is required to consult with the community on our Health curriculum. We last did this in 2021 but we had a very small response as we were in lockdown for much of the year. Harakeke and Pohutukawa team currently have programmes being delivered that fall under the Health umbrella so it is timely to consult with you now rather than next year. Please take approximately 5 mins to complete the survey: Health Curriculum Consultation
A big weekend is coming up for our two more senior Jump Jam teams, who will be competing in the National competition in Tauranga. We wish them the best. I am certainly looking forward to seeing them compete after so much hard training.
Please remember, we have a Teacher Only Day this Friday. School will be closed but Kohia Kids Zone will be operating. Enjoy the extra long weekend before the run up to Christmas – Alison
Bee Lady visit
The Koru Team had The Bee Lady come for a visit last week. The kids were BUZZING with excitement! Her visit was a wonderful way to spark the kids in their learning as well as to watch bees in action in her hive. We were able to spot the queen bee as well as learn how amazing bees are!
Sports Update
Basketball
Year 7/8 Cobras had their first game of the term on Thursday - They played very well! A warm welcome to Dillon Wong who is coaching the team this term.
Softball
Our Year 6 Softball team had a fabulous day of games on Tuesday 1st November. We won 4 games, lost 1 and drew 2. Our team played with excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. Thank you to Mr H and Miss O for coaching and umpiring the team.
Table Tennis
Congratulations to our Year 5 & 6 table tennis team who competed last Thursday with much success. Grace (Rm 8) placed first in the girls competition, with the team also taking out first place in the team section. This is a rarity for KTS as we are a relatively small school in the Year 5/6 competition. Well done team and special thanks to Nicola Zimmerman for training and supporting the team. This is what Sora (Rm 9) had to say about the day:
We went to ATTA (Auckland Table Tennis Association) for the table tennis zones. When we went there, we warmed up for the upcoming games and when it started, we were split into groups of 8 players. We versed each other, winning matches one after another, and sometimes losing games, but we all had fun. The 2 people who won the most matches in their groups moved on to the knockout matches. With the support of our teammates, parents, and teachers, we were able to keep on going, and not give up. Some people in our school were able to get into the semi-finals and then the finals. Congratulations to the KTS girls team which won the most matches out of all of the other girls teams and came first!
Congratulations to everyone who participated and tried their best. A big thank you to Whaea Nicola, Erica Carey, Xenia Looi who supported us all the way!
Cornerstone Plaques
As we come to the end of another school year, some families are preparing to leave the school for the last time. You may want to consider purchasing a cornerstone plaque, which will be placed on the pillars outside the intermediate classrooms. In years to come, they are a great record of your involvement with the school. The order forms can be found on the front page of the website. http://www.kts.school.nz/
PTA Update
Thanks to everyone who came along to our final PTA meeting last night. It was a productive reflection on our year with lots of great ideas for 2023. We are pleased to report that our Music Bingo night was a great success, fundraising nearly $10,000 and getting us very close to our annual fundraising goal of $25,000. Don't forget to support our many sponsors who donated goods and services to the night.
We have one more big event this year which we are really looking forward to - our annual gathering for International Night. This year our celebration will include a “Food Festival” with stalls featuring the amazing cultures and cooking skills of our community. We hope to have the following stalls - baking, South Asian (curries) and Asian cuisine - and are seeking parent helpers to contribute. If you are able to help cook a dish, please add your name to the SIGN UP SHEET and our stall coordinators will be in touch with you.
