JANUARY 11, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
Despite the weather, athletics, activities and clubs are heating up. I was at the girls’ basketball game last night and appreciate all the effort and sportsmanship. Our math team is in position to challenge for a top spot in our section and are currently ranked 12th in the state. In addition, our robotics team gathered for the season kick-off last Saturday and received their competition challenge and guidelines for this year’s First Robotics competition.
I encourage families to join us in supporting our student extracurriculars and look forward to connecting with you at some of our upcoming events. I hope you will also take a minute today to check out the student shark tank story in the newsletter. Students presented many great products and business concepts as part of the Marketing and Entrepreneurship class.
Reminder that this Friday we will have an early release day. Please refer to last week’s newsletter and follow up messages for details. Classes will conclude after lunch at 12:40 p.m. Buses will run on normal schedule. Students who stay at school will have opportunities to sign up for activities or continue to work in productive spaces.
On January 24, Panther Mentors and all 9th grade students will have an opportunity to hear speaker Kate Gladdin. Kate is a resiliency expert who shares her story along with tips and strategies on how to deal with the tough stuff that life can sometimes bring. Learn more at KateGladdin.com. Kate joins us through our partnership with the Thumbs Up organization.
Families and community members are invited to hear Kate’s same talk on January 26, 2023 at 6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center at Spring Lake Park School. The talk will be paired with a health fair at Spring Lake Park High School in the Rotunda where families can learn more about community resources. See more information in the newsletter below.
Finally, I want to remind families that there is no school next Monday, January 16 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a federal holiday. Enjoy the long the weekend.

Students in Marketing and Entrepreneurship class make their Shark Tank pitches
Spring Lake Park High School juniors and seniors pitched their business ideas “Shark Tank style” to a panel of judges – gaining valuable insights and feedback from industry experts. Five finalist groups presented before winter break to an audience of peers, teachers, family members and “the sharks.”
The energy in the room is palpable as students present their ideas for new business products and services to a panel of industry leaders. They are apps for personal finance, pants that charge your electronic devices, innovative school lunch plans and jazzed up picnic blankets. Behind the scenes, they have been preparing for this moment since the beginning of the school year.
The top prize was awarded to “Brace Alert,” an invention by juniors Jaelyn Comer and Brianna Vandewiele. Read the full story about the Shark Tank experience and view the photo album of presentations and the finalists.
House progress continues
Major progress on the house build continues in the construction trades class (even with the need to snowblow a path around the outside!) A recent highlight includes students completing the window installation. Also a big milestone that all the plumbing and electrical completed by licensed trades professionals was recently approved by an inspector!
