ACP MIDDLE SCHOOL - September 10, 2021
Message from the Principal
Dear Knights,
We have two weeks to the end of the 1st quarter. Classes and clubs are in full swing of things! Our Knights in training are meeting every expectation. 3 out of the 5 teams from the 1st quarter are moving onto the second round of play offs!! We will end the last week before the fall break with a Spirit Week. Themes are detailed in the ACP events below. If your student has been quarantined, please make sure that they are logging in during their class period, completing and submitting their work in the specific Google Classroom. For any questions, have them reach out to their teachers.
Celebration Assemblies:
Given all that our students have endured in the last year and a half, our focus is to recognize our students for exhibiting values that are at the core of being an ACP Knight. Our first recognition theme is centered on Friendship & Sincerity. Each teacher has nominated one student to receive this recognition from their classes. The celebration will be done in front of their peers (grade level) and parents of the nominated students are invited to participate as well (but we ask that you not share with your student so it is a surprise to them). Our first celebration assemblies will be as follows:
6th Grade: 09/20/2021 after announcements during AC Lab (Academic Lab) in the Gym
7th Grade: 09/21/2021 after announcements during AC Lab in the Gym
8th Grade: 09/24/2021 after announcements during AC Lab in the Gym
Action Item(s) for you:
If you have not completed the Broadband & Connectivity survey yet, the deadline has been extended, please complete it ASAP. It is available on the parent portal. We have about 70 families that still need to complete this. Please read the Booster Club information and take the necessary action.
Thank you,
Manjula K Reddy

Counseling & Social Work Department Update
The Counseling and Social Services department has started a monthly wellness newsletter for caregivers and families called Medieval Monthly. The newsletter will provide ideas, tips, tricks, and resources on how to best support your ACP Middle School student. You can find September’s Medieval Monthly by visiting the ACP Middle School website and looking under “Our Staff” and “Counseling and Social Services.”
Suicide Prevention
During this challenging year, school staff are working to teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. We are using a program called SOS Signs of Suicide. The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help.
SOS is an evidenced-based program that has demonstrated an improvement in students’ knowledge and adaptive attitudes about suicide risk and depression, as well as a reduction in actual suicide attempts.
Through the program, students learn:
● that depression is treatable, so they are encouraged to seek help
● how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves and/or a friend
● to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves and/or a friend
● who they can turn to at school for help, if they need it
Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a response slip which asks whether they would like to talk to an adult about any concerns. School staff will conduct brief meetings with any student asking to talk.
Following the video, students will complete a brief depression screening tool. This tool cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should be referred for evaluation by a mental health professional.
We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn.
We are including:
● An infographic for you to reinforce the ACT message at home
● A list of local resources
If you do NOT wish your child to participate in the SOS Program in school, please notify our 7th grade counselor, Jennifer Clauschee by Monday, September 13, 2021. Mrs. Clauschee can be reached at clauschee.jennifer@cusd80.com. If we do not hear from you, we will assume your child has permission to participate in this program. This program will be administered on Wednesday, September 15 and Thursday, September 16 through our 7th grade Social Studies classrooms.

Getting it Right: Building Diverse Classroom for an Inclusive Learning Community
Mr. Michael Haggen,
Senior VP & Chief Academic Officer, Scholastic
Research shows that reading is paramount to academic success. That's why building a classroom school and library that incorporates diverse perspectives, is an essential component of successful learning outcomes for all students. So, the question remains--how can we provide mirrors and windows in classrooms and school libraries that ignite the joy of reading for all students? The session will focus on research on the power of independent reading through the provision of mirrors and windows. Join us as we explore a transformative framework that uses literacy to increase learning outcomes for all students, one book at a time.
Our counselors are here to support all ACP students.
