May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Because of these issues, the Crisis Prevention Institute is offering some tips for de-escalating stressful situations:
Understand that Behavior is Communication: Look for signs of anxiety in body language, tone and cadence. Crisis behavior reflects a need so consider what the other person might need. Avoid the Power Struggle: No one can meet every need at every moment. Considering different options lets you address both parties’ needs and desired outcomes. Use Limit Setting: Behavior can’t be forced but setting limits can help influence behaviors. Framing acceptable behaviors can encourage the other person to choose the most productive option. Practice Rational Detachment: Don’t take it personally. Find a positive way to release the negative energy you absorbed during the conflict. You can only control your own attitude and actions, not someone else’s. Therapeutic Rapport: Learn from the conflict and help the other person learn from the experience. Finally, put time and effort into repairing the relationship. CPI has found that stress, fear and anxiety can impact mental health both short- and long-term. Under stress, people’s reactions can escalate and lead to verbal and even physical conflict. This is why CPI instills in its methods the philosophy of Care, Welfare, Safety and SecuritySM for everyone.
European Explorers
What were these guys really like? What challenges did they face? Why did they act the way they did? Were they "One Trip Wonders," or did they make many journeys to different lands to discover new things? Remember, when the Europeans were sailing across the ocean, they weren't always sure where they'd end up - some probably thought they'd fall off the edge. It's all about the research, but sometimes you just want to know a little more. Visit this collection of EPIC! books to answer all your questions.
