Transition Talk

October 2021

Collin's Connection

We are off to a great start at the Round Lake Transition Center. It is so wonderful to have our students and staff back in the building, it was lonely without seeing their smiles everyday. I can't believe that it is October already, and all things are pumpkin spice, and Halloween. Wow, how time flies!

This year we have added additional staff to accommodate for COVID, social emotional learning and social distancing throughout our BIG little school. Programming consist of our outstanding life skills, and work base training. In addition, we are now providing intensive vocational in-class training for all students. With this addition, students are provided skill development on resume writing, and job readiness training. At this time we are proud to announce that all students have completed their resumes, and are currently working on cover letters.

We have secured the Lake County Workforce Grant - Career Crossroads Program, which allows us to provide paid training for 10 students. Students that are afforded this great opportunity must be a graduating senior with an Individual Educational Plan, or have completed 3 years at the transition program. From this program 6 students will be given an opportunity to participate over the summer in our paid internship program.r.

Stayed tuned because we have more awesome programming coming that we will unveil before the end of the year!

Big picture

Feltner Flash

We are off to a frightfully good start in our Transition classroom! Our shopping community outings and Round Lake Transition Cooking are carved into our schedules beginning October 18. The Transition program monthly mobility trips begin October 29 with a Metra train ride to Fox Lake. In November we begin monthly Round Lake Library trips as well as Dollar Tree runs. We are tackling sometimes tricky functional academics as well as treating ourselves to autumn related searches, trivia and puzzles, as we apply them to daily living and life skills. We meet with Jim Cacciatore, our Instructional Technology Specialist, monthly to explore optional uses for our iPads to further our educational growth and bat around ideas, with student input.

Harrelson Herald

Miss Trina teaches reading math and other functional academic subjects in the context of current events, including sports teams. Here students are filling out a bracket for the 2021 MLB Baseball playoffs as a way of practicing identifying names of cities across the United States, in addition to the skill of making predictions. Other recent current event topics include Van Gogh and the new multi-city multimedia exhibits, a sheep festival in Idaho, Disneyworld’s 50th Anniversary, and a new museum in Giza, Egypt. Students enjoy reading material that is current, relevant and high-interest. The curriculum includes plenty of visual supports. The staff and students enjoy discussions, videos, activities and games based on the current news story of the week.
