6G News
Week of November 27th
We had a hardworking, challenging, and fun week. Here are some highlights!
- The kids took the STAR math and literacy tests this week. They did an amazing job focusing, using strategies, and working through frustrations. It was clear they all took the test seriously, and I saw fantastic growth across the board. They should all be proud of themselves!
- In Literacy and Social Studies this week, we continued learning about the events in the Civil Rights Movement. We also began conducting our own research projects on the role of young people in the movement. We learned how to conduct effective internet searches, how to look for credible sites, how to use primary documents like interviews and photos in our research, and how to write about what we learned in our own words. Check our newsletter next week to see some examples of the posters we create.
- Also in Literacy, we began reading the graphic novel March. The graphic novel is the memoir of Civil Rights activist and former congressman John Lewis. We learned some new vocabulary as we started the book and dove right in to working with a graphic novel!
- In math this week, we wrapped up and reviewed our unit on rates and percentages, and will be taking our assessment next week. The kids did an amazing job understanding these concepts. Next, we'll be diving in to a new unit on dividing fractions. We'll be starting with the concepts of what dividing fractions really means, learning various models, and then ending with the algorithm for fraction division.
Announcements
- Secret Gift Exchange: Your child should have a secret person! We are all creating some sort of handmade gift for our person, and will have a present party on the last day of school before break! We talked about some ideas for this in class, but please let me know if your child needs help with any ideas or materials. I don't want this to be stressful, time consuming, or expensive, so again, let me know if your child needs any help with this!
- Trout in the Classroom: Our class will be participating in the Trout in the Classroom Program this year! We'll be extending our learning about water by learning about the nitrogen cycle, setting up a tank/chiller system, and getting/raising brook trout eggs from the Roxbury hatchery. This has proven to be a really fun learning experience in past years! We'll also be hearing from some fish biologists and visiting a hatchery, so stay tuned for dates (and of course pictures of our trout babies!).
- Peer Mentoring, December 13th: We'll be heading to Norman Williams Public Library for a read aloud and then to WES for an activity with our 3rd grade buddies. We'll be leaving TPVS around 12:35 and will return by 2:20 for a normal dismissal.
- Ski Runners/Winter Fridays: Please make sure to sign your child up for ski runners if you are planning on it! Our school will also be offering in-house clubs/programs on Friday afternoons during winter Fridays! These will most likely include choices like climbing club, art club, some kind of baking/cooking, and outdoor adventures sledding/adventures (all the choices have not yet been finalized, but we'll send out a complete list soon). Let me know if you have any questions about winter Fridays!
- PE Newsletter: Check out this newsletter from Ms. Payne to see what the kids have been up to in PE.
Please feel free to get in touch anytime. I'd love to hear from you!
