Peek at the Week
Week of 10/8
Upbeat message :)
I want to again reiterate how awesome the hike went! I am sure many of you knew what a wreck I was to have all those kids and parents on the hike; however, it seemed to go very well! Thank you again for your flexibility and patience as we tried something new! :)
Julie's new schedule: (take 5)
I realized if I rotate Fridays and work at WES on Wednesdays, it isn't fair because I have leadership on Wednesdays in the afternoon.
So.......
Monday - WES
Tuesday - SME
Wednesday - rotate - WES this week
Thursday - WES
Friday - SME
Important things to know this week:
Ms. Taska is going to be switching duties and filling in at WES as an SEA. Barb has agreed to take over at SME in 1st grade until Lauren is back in January.
Cally is taking over Barb's caseload in K-2 and continuing with grade 3 until January.
We are focusing on pushing in for Titles teachers until Winter assessments which means that the schedules that Cally, Carmen, and Kathy are sending out mean that they will be IN your classrooms focusing on centers work. Unfortunately, we didn't have the staff meeting to talk data last week, but across the board, we are extremely low. Pull out does not make sense at this time, because to get the most "bang" for our "bucks", we want to hit the most kids at once with math and literacy.
We will have fire drills on Thursday at both schools (unless it is pouring).
This is fire prevention week! The Fairlee FD will be at SME from 9-1045 on 10/11 (Thursday) to do some work with K,1,2. They will show kids their trucks, and come to each classroom for about 30 minutes to talk about how to stay safe in a fire.
Don't forget to get your ROCKS quotes to Elizabeth for the ROCKS roll out at Community Meeting this week.
Highlights of my schedule:
I am starting the "Coffee Chat" at both schools this week. Wednesday from 8-9 at WES and Thursday from 8-9 at SME.
I have a meeting at the district office on Tuesday from 12-? about bullying prevention.
Leadership is Wednesday from 12:45-2:45.
Lots of parents are starting to ask for bullying/harassment investigations - each investigation/write up takes about 3 hours, so if you are wondering what I am doing, that is probably it! :)
Don't forget about Trunk or Treat on 10/28 at WES! It is from 430-530 and will prove to be AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!
I hope you all enjoyed a lovely weekend!
Julie
Behavior Tips
Beyond the kids...(just a reminder to look within too)
Extreme negativity. The teacher's comments to the class are frequently couched in negative and/or highly authoritative terms. (“It's obvious that nobody knows what a theorem is. It looks like many of you will fail the test on Friday.”)
Excessive authoritarian climate. These teachers desire to be the absolute and complete authority figure in the classroom. All decisions are theirs. (“It's my way or the highway!”)
Overreacting. This teacher creates mountains out of molehills by escalating minor disturbances into major ones. (“I'm tired of your tardiness. I want all of you to write one hundred times, 'I will not be late to Mrs. Northwing's class.'”)
Mass punishment. These teachers hope peer pressure will result in a change of behavior for a few select students. (“It's obvious that Robert and Edwardo can't behave, so we just won't celebrate Linda's birthday today.”)
Blaming. This teacher often picks out two or three students and consistently blames them for every little infraction that may occur. (“Alright, who made that noise? Was it you again, LaToya?”)
Lack of instructional goals. Often teachers will engage students without a clearly defined or clearly understood (by students) goal for the lesson. (“Okay, is there anything anyone wants to talk about before we begin?”)
Repeating or reviewing already understood material. In an effort to make sure students are exposed to important material, teachers might constantly repeat material over and over again in the same way. There is no challenge. (“All right, I want you to look up the definitions for these 20 words, write them in your notebook, and then write them again on this chart.”)
Dealing with a single student at length. This teacher often disrupts his own instructional rhythm by spending an inordinate amount of time on one student. (“I can't believe you are still talking, Sierra. I've told you over and over and over again about talking in class.” [Five minutes of lecture ensue.])
Not recognizing students' ability levels. This teacher plans a lesson that is often over the heads of many students in the class. A single lesson is much easier to prepare than multiple mini-lessons. (“This is material everybody should know, so I want everyone to listen carefully so you can all do well on the exam.”)

Continuous Improvement for Rivendell School District
2018-19 Continuous Improvement Plan
RISD will improve the teacher evaluation system during the 2018-19 school year. They will implement a walk-through check sheet with specific criteria, implement a smart goal process for teachers and staff, and complete a template indicating which teachers are being evaluated, how often, and determine what a effective summative evaluation will look like. This will be completed by creating a committee of teachers and administrators - a finished product will be created and implemented in the 18-19 school year.
RISD will work to improve the EST model at all three schools during the 18-19 school year to target academic and social-emotional goals for students. The schools will have one EST team which will have representatives from all three schools, create new communication templates, and work together to create supports for all students to achieve success in both the academic and social-emotional realms.
RISD will work to improve assessment for all students. A committee will research effective, nationally normed tools for diagnostic screening and universal screening for both academic and social emotional growth. The committee will make recommendations for implementation in the 2019-2020 school year. The District will also work to provide quality professional development to improve formative and summative assessment in the classroom, making sure that assessments are differentiated to meet the needs of all learners, valid and reliable, and demonstrate a high level of learning and understanding. We will also examine a data system for the storing, access, and manipulation of data.
RISD will work to provide high quality professional development surrounding project based learning and critical explorations. Teachers, staff, and administration will be guided through choosing and implementing effective, integrated projects with creative materials for critical explorations that encourage deep thinking and questioning about the subject matter at hand. This will ensure that all teachers have been trained in providing high quality instruction in project based learning and critical explorations.
RISD will work to provide high quality professional development surrounding curricular alignment. Teachers will concentrate specifically on English language arts for the first year of the cycle, working to align reading and writing workshop, spelling programs, phonemic awareness, and the integration of social studies in grades 3-12 into a humanities based model. Teachers who teach other concentrations will focus on aligning their non-ELA curriculum during this professional learning time.
RISD will work to provide high quality professional learning to all staff, teachers, and administration surrounding Hazing, Harassment, and Bullying and becoming a trauma informed school. This will ensure that all staff is properly trained on proper reporting techniques, investigations, and how to work with our neediest populations.
