Hello Bobcat Families!
Our note this week focuses on the importance of preparing your family for remote learning - a situation we need to always be ready for. As you have seen over the last few weeks, several grade levels at other GPS elementary schools have had to quarantine, and we want to make sure we are prepared for the same situation - if a grade level must quarantine, learning will continue the following day in the remote format via Google Classroom. Our teachers and staff are working hard to make sure ALL students can access their Google Classroom, Google Meets, and Seesaw (for Pre-K -2nd only).
Parents & Families:
1. Please check your student(s)' iPad and be sure you also know how to open their Google Classroom. It is important to be familiar with the platform, as parents will be able to access assignments, get emails about missing work, etc.
2. Please be sure you are familiar with Google Meet. If you do not have a Gmail account, we highly recommend you sign up for one now, so you can easily communicate on the Google platform should we need to pivot to remote school.
3. Please be sure to check your dojo messages from your teacher every day.
4. If your family needs wifi, please email Mrs. Michaelson at alexandra_bartholomew@greenwich.k12.ct.us or call her cell phone at 475-333-1732.
As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions - we are always available!

Greenwich CT Remote School Group Update (sessions available for ALL parents)
The Greenwich CT Remote School Group is a virtual community of nearly 600 families who have opted in to the Greenwich Public School remote learning option. Our group's motto is "We Learn Together" and to fulfill that promise, we launch the Greenwich CT Remote School Group 2020 Speaker Series.
10/21 Joan Kelley Recording (link) Access Passcode: JoanKelley
On Wednesday, October 21 our speaker was Joan Kelley, founder of Abound Parenting, sharing "Parenting in the time of COVID: Key things to know to keep your child growing as a reader." Kelley is a M.Ed., Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), former teacher and prolific literacy author who has worked with school districts across the country to help educators set up the kinds of classroom instruction that make a difference for children’s reading outcomes. To support families of children from age 3 to Grade 3, Kelley has launched an innovative, low-cost learning app providing fun and engaging learning prompts. Contact Joan Kelley at joan@aboundparenting.com and learn more about her learning app and other services at https://aboundparenting.com/
Kelly provided an incredibly practical and tangible presentation about literacy and becoming a strong reader. Kelly shared the "three buckets" of learning to read:
(1) mechanical - letters and sounds, this is taught at schools
(2) vocabulary and knowledge - parents play a role; move beyond transactional and colloquial language to abstract, academic language
(3) awareness and regulation - stamina, focus, energy
Kelly emphasized that becoming a strong reader is a drip, drip, drip of years of accumulated knowledge. Read with and to your children. Share your joy and curiosity.

Families of Students with IEPs
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome or welcome back to New Lebanon School! We understand that the special education process can be an isolating and overwhelming experience. Beginning last September we created the Listening Community. This was a place for parents of children with special needs. The goal of our group continues to be providing you a place to feel heard and a place for you to support each other through the special education process. Should you be interested in joining the Listening Community beginning this Friday, please RSVP to this email. Please know that a Spanish speaking facilitator will also be in attendance.
In the past, we had the luxury of meeting indoors, but in order to keep everyone safe, we are planning to host these meetings outside. We are excited to have some face to face meetings, while maintaining the district’s guidelines, so masks and social distancing will be required. Please bring a lawn chair and perhaps a blanket as the fall chill begins to fill the air. Both meetings will be held on the western side of New Lebanon’s field. You will see a group of us gathered on the field closest to Byram Library.
Friday meetings are scheduled from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM. The dates have been set for the following: 10/30/20, 11/6/20, 11/13/20
Wednesday evening meetings are scheduled from 5 PM- 6 PM. The dates have been set for the following: 10/28/20, 11/4/20, 11/11/20
Please RSVP emailing sabrina_motta@greenwich.k12.ct.us if you plan on attending on one, two, three… or all :-) of these dates.
We hope that you are able to commit to all or most of the dates in order to maintain participation and the group’s focus.
Thank you,
Sandra Corrente, Emily Khoshaboo, Sabrina Motta, Kristen Mulhearn, & Geanna Partland
