A Dollop of Dyslexia
The Purpose of Repetition
· If you learn simple facts in an area that you are already familiar with you may retain that information without much repetition.
· If you encode the information in many forms (associations, audio, image, the way the word looks) you may need few repetitions.
· For new language or other unstructured data you may need seven repetitions or more, with each repetition contributing less than the previous.
Goldentouch, PhD, in How Many Repetitions for Long Term Retention, 2013.
The information above is associated with the average learners (no learning disabilities). When working with the dyslexic learner, they must be exposed to something 500-1500 times in order to truly retain the concept. Such is the reason for so much repetition used in the Take Flight program. These students are the ones that can spell or read a word three different ways on the same page. They did not “get it” the first time around in first and second grade. Dyslexia therapy provides that opportunity to them again and in a manner that they can relate to, and ultimately make associations.
