STILLSON BUZZ
February 2023 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Stillson Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you and your family well. Hopefully in the next few weeks we will start to see some signs of spring and some warmer temperatures ahead!
The monthly theme for February is Cooperation. During the course of the month, students will read books and have discussions in their classroom about what cooperation means. They will participate in various team-building activities in their classroom. At Stillson, we believe in the importance of community service and giving back. Each class will work together in order to design and create a valentine that will be sent to the local Veterans Home. Please help us reinforce the importance of cooperation and working together at home.
February is the start of our second semester. Report cards were posted on Infinite Campus and also sent home in folders last week. Stillson will be holding in-person parent teacher conferences on March 7th and 9th in the evening to discuss student growth and progress. Please watch for communication from your child's teacher about scheduling a conference time towards the end of February.
Other news:
Congratulations to our Stillson Stingers who represented us so well at the Bloomer Jump Off. Lyncoln H., Carter H., MacKenzie V., Elaina L., and Landon L. also made it to the finals in their divisions!
Thank you for all your support!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Sarauer
Stillson Elementary Principal

Stillson Stingers Cozy Up & Read Fundraiser
We are so excited to announce our upcoming readathon, Stillson Stingers Cozy Up & Read, to help raise money for Stillson PTO! We're challenging our students to read and raise $2,000 from January 23rd - February 5th. The more you and your child read and raise, the closer we'll get to our goal!
Participating is simple. When you and your student log into Beanstack using their school Google account at, https://cfsdstillson.beanstack.org/ on January 23rd, you'll be able to see and share their donation page with your family and friends and log all the reading you do at home - books, audiobooks, ebooks, family story time - it all counts! Any donations contributed through their individual page will help your student earn badges. And donors can leave messages and notes to encourage your student's reading and raising! The class that reads the most will win a whole class prize!
We'll be sending reminder messages and progress updates during Stillson Stingers Cozy Up & Read, (keep an eye on ClassDojo) and we hope to see you and your student sharing and reading starting on January 23rd.
We’re kicking off our readathon with a school wide Pajama Day on Monday, January 23rd.
Happy Reading!

Culver's Night
Stillson Families,
Tuesday, February 7 is our next Culver’s evening! Come on out to the Hallie Culver’s between 5pm-8pm to support the Stillson staff’s effort to raise money for a community project.
This coming spring Stillson staff will be partnering with the organization Sleep in Heavenly Peace. We will construct beds for children in our community that do not have a bed of their own. Our school needs to raise $4000 to pay for the construction materials needed for the beds.
Your family can show support by having a yummy meal and saying “Hi” to the staff that are working. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday!

Dressing for the Season
Please be sure your child leaves in the morning dressed for the weather conditions. Dressing in layers is always a good idea. Boots, gloves, hats and snow pants should become part of their standard attire.
Students will be going outside during recess except when the actual temperature or wind chill is –6 or colder. They will be allowed to play in the snow if dressed properly. It is also important to label your child’s clothing and boots. Recess is an important time for social interaction. Exercise is a critical component for healthy growth and academic success.
All students will be expected to go outside for recess.

Why Every Day Matters
Why Every Day Matters: The Importance of School Attendance
Ellen Reilly, Family Support & Resource Coordinator
Chippewa Falls Elementary Schools
School attendance has the second greatest impact on student achievement, followed only by the quality of teacher; the best teacher in the world cannot teach someone who isn't there.
School attendance is the first key to success for your student/s. Having them arrive to school on time and ready to learn is an important routine that can help them build lifelong good habits and lead them on to a happy and productive life!
Research shows:
Students who are frequently absent in Kindergarten tend to gradually increase their absences in subsequent years, and demonstrate lower achievement in reading, math, and general knowledge.
Poor attendance has serious implications for later outcomes as well. High school dropouts have been found to exhibit a history of negative behaviors, including high levels of absenteeism throughout their childhood, at higher rates than high school graduates.
Students who eventually dropped out of high school missed significantly more days of school in first grade than their peers who graduated from high school. In eighth grade, this pattern was even more apparent and, by ninth grade, attendance was shown to be a key indicator significantly correlated with high school graduation.
If you are struggling to get your child/children/student/s to school, please reach out for support. Chippewa Elementary Schools are working together to increase attendance and improve your child's academic and social outcomes! Contact your child's school counselor (listed below) or Ellen Reilly, the Family Support & Resource Coordinator to see how we may be able to help!
