October 2019

Dear Parents,

You can tell that fall is in the air with the cooler temperatures. The leaves are beginning to turn into what will be a magnificent array of colors. Take some time to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends.

On November 1st, the students will participate in our Fun Run. Huge thanks go to all the parent volunteers and our PTA Board who organized everything and spent endless hours preparing for the run. We would also like to thank the volunteers from Dojo who help make our pep rally and Fun Run successful events. I want to express my appreciation to everyone who contributed to the Fun Run. You make a difference! We’ve done an amazing job, and all the proceeds will remain at Duncan Creek.

Thank you for participating in Parent-Teacher conferences during the week of October 21st. This is an important time to communicate face-to-face with your child’s teacher. Conferences for the second semester will take place the week of February 17th. In addition to these designated dates, please contact your child’s teacher at any time to schedule a conference as needed.

The school will be closed November 25-29 for Thanksgiving break. Please use this time to relax and enjoy time with your family and friends.

Duncan Creek Elementary is a wonderful school thanks to the support from our parents and community. Thank you for what you do each and every day to make this possible.

Get Connected!

Gwinnett County Public Schools’ (GCPS) 2019‐20 school calendar includes two make‐up days to address school days missed due to inclement weather. In addition to these days, GCPS also has the option of using Digital Learning Days to make up days missed due to inclement weather. Should a decision be made to cancel school, students, parents, and staff will be notified of the closing and if the day is a Digital Learning Day.

How will it work for students?

  • · On the day that school has been canceled, teachers will post assignments on their eCLASS C&I course pages. High school assignments will be posted by 8 a.m. Elementary school assignments will be posted by 9 a.m. And, middle school assignments will be posted by 10 a.m.
  • · Students will use the MyeCLASS student portal to log in to their eCLASS C&I course pages where they will access assignments, resources, and other materials. If the power is out, a student may access the teacher’s course page when power returns. If a student does not have access to a computer or device (tablet, smartphone, etc.), the student can get the assignment once school resumes.
  • · Student work will be expected to be turned in to the teacher (either digitally or in person), using a school’s process for turning in work following an absence. For example, if your school allows students to turn in work two days after a missed day, the Digital Learning Day assignments would be due two days after classes resume.
  • During the school year, teachers will share additional information with students about Digital Learning Days, including how they will support student learning during the day. (For example, some teachers may set up a discussion board while others may use online conference tools or be available via phone.)

Parents and students who need a refresher course on how to access eCLASS C&I course pages can go to the following web page for helpful resources and information:

all about art

The DCES Art department has teamed up with Square 1 Art! This is a unique and fun way to support your child and their art making by purchasing their original creations on a variety of products like mugs, pillow cases, bags, and more! Your student has received a custom catalog featuring their very own artwork! The personalized items purchased will be delivered to the school and go home with your child before Thanksgiving break. Our hope is that you find this a unique tradition throughout your child's elementary school years and enjoy collecting these special treasures. The school wide art theme is our school mascot, the beautiful northern red cardinal! We thank you in advance for supporting your child and the arts!

Creatively yours,

Mrs. Silver and Mrs. Brinkley

From our FOCUS Teachers

The Gwinnett County Public Schools' Accelerated Programs and Gifted Education Department serves students by providing academic challenges for those who are intellectually advanced. The elementary level gifted program is called FOCUS (Fostering Originality, Creativity, Understanding, and Self Awareness), and its purpose is to help each student reach his/her full potential by offering a greater depth of service than provided in the general classroom. The gifted education program focuses on the following areas, as appropriate for each student:

  • creative expression
  • thinking skills
  • self-awareness in order to learn to cope with weaknesses and to explore and appreciate strengths
  • communication with peers of similar ability and interests
  • decision-making
  • acceptance of challenges, stipulations and competitions with others and self
  • interest in the fine arts
  • training in various career fields of interest
  • a positive attitude toward mankind
  • self-direction
  • the ability to cope with, change, and foresee the needs of the future
  • understanding and expression of quality and excellence in one's performance

Many times, parents and educators have difficulty distinguishing between a high achieving bright child and a “gifted learner”. This chart can help with understanding the differences:
