From Ms. Kellman
This month all grade levels have been talking about positive and negative self talk. We have read the book, " Don't Feed the Worry Monster." This book talks about the more we worry the bigger our bug gets. Once the worry bug gets too big we can't control it and our emotions. We connected this to the zones and how our negative self talk or our worries, can get us deep into the red or blue zone. One student connected the zones to a Color Wheel, I have been using that for all classes. It has been great to define what part of the red, blue, yellow, or green zone we are in. We had great discussions in all grade levels on how we are in control of our thinking and emotions. We will continue next month on filling our tool box with calm down strategies and turning our negative self talk around.
Erin's Law
Attention All Parents: To comply with Erin’s Law, HCS school counselors and administrators have created a plan to provide basic child sexual abuse prevention lessons for students. We have prepared a brief video that outlines plans for elementary, middle and high school levels. You will find more detailed information on HCS’s plan to implement Erin’s Law, including the option for your child to opt out of these lessons if you so choose. This information is also available in Spanish. Disclaimer: If you need alternate accommodations in accessing the video content, please contact Marley Stephens at mstephens@hoover.k12.al.us.

Spanish with Senora Gaines
¡Hola mi famillia de Bluff Park! I see my students increasing in their knowledge of and wanting to learn more Spanish each day. So, gracias to all of you for continuing to encourage your students at home. This week, my Kindergarten amigos reviewed numbers 0-10 with the ball in class as well as increased up to 15. They also learned the días de semana (days of the week). My favorite video to use is Sr. Hodge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nyuTTn6hVM. My 1st and 2nd grade amigos reviewed numbers with the ball as well as learned two new things. They learned how to say where they are from ‘Soy de ________’ [soy-day-____] and learned some more clothing items. My 3rd and 4th grade amigos watched a dialog in Spanish about two friends deciding what to wear. We then reviewed colors and they described what an amigo or amiga was wearing.
Our ‘frase de semana’ this week is yo tampoco [yoh-tahm-poh-koh] which means ‘me either’.
We will be doing an activity in all of mis clases for Dia de San Valentín.
Gracias for all you do,
Profesora Melany Gaines

Flu Season
We are approaching flu season. Currently our school is not seeing many cases of the flu. However, we have started monitoring numbers daily. Please partner with us, as you monitor your children when they have symptoms of illness, to be sure that they do not attend school while they have fever. Common flu symptoms include:
Fever or feeling feverish/chills.(Temp of 100.0 or above)
Cough.
Sore throat.
Runny or stuffy nose.
Muscle or body aches.
Headaches.
Fatigue (tiredness)
Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
.
The Alabama Department of Public Health urges the general public to follow these actions to avoid getting and spreading the flu:
* Stay at home if you have a fever, and for at least 24 hours post fever without fever-reducing
* Wash your hands often
* Cover your cough and sneeze
* Clean and disinfect your environment
* Consider getting the flu vaccine
Parents, please notify the school nurse if your child has been diagnosed by a physician with the flu. You may call the Health Room at 439-2830 or email Nurse Melanie at mjourdan@hoover.k12.al.us to report any cases.
