Beaverton School District Now Enrolling for Kindergarten 2018-2019
The Beaverton School District is now enrolling for Kindergarten at all elementary schools for the 2018-2019 school year.
Any child who will be five (5) years of age on or before September 1, 2018 is now eligible to enroll for Kindergarten at their designated home school. Registration packets are available at all District elementary schools. Parents/guardians will need to provide a birth certificate and immunization record at the time of enrollment.
Each elementary school will offer parents an opportunity to find out more about the kindergarten program at their spring Kindergarten information events.
Please check with your neighborhood school to see when the event is scheduled.
If you are uncertain about which elementary school is your home school, you can check any address to see what elementary, middle or high school attendance boundary it is located in using the District Address Locator or call 503-356-4500.
For more information on registering your child for Kindergarten, including a list of
2018-2019 Kindergarten Orientation Dates, Immunization Requirements and much more, please visit the Kindergarten Information webpage.

Instructional Material Review Decision
A parent recently brought forth a concern about a book titled "Stick" by Andrew Smith. Per Board Policy (II/IIA-AR-Instructional Materials Selection), a committee was formed to review the formal complaint. The committee consisted of two community members, an option school principal, a high school English Language Arts Instructor, an English Language Arts Teacher on Special Assignment, a Library Specialist Teacher on Special Assignment and Ken Struckmeier, Administrator for Secondary Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. The parent and student were also present for the review. The committee recommended to Dr. Steve Phillips, Deputy Superintendent of Teaching and Learning to deny the parent request and keep the book in place.
Dr. Phillips upheld the committees' recommendation with the following qualifications:
1. "Stick" will not be allowed in Beaverton School District middle schools.
2. "Stick" will only be used in classrooms primarily attended by junior and senior students.
3. Beaverton School District teachers will include in their beginning of the year syllabus and/or welcome letters to parents a list of the books (supplementary materials) that
they intend to use as teaching/learning resources per Board Policy II/IIA-AR which states in part: "Parents and guardians are to be informed of the use of supplementary
materials, and to extent possible, all supplementary instructional materials shall be available for inspection by the parents or guardians of the student prior to their use."

SafeOregon Tipline
Creating a safe learning environment is a critical part of helping each child achieve academic success. SafeOregon is a statewide school safety tip line that gives kids, parents, schools and their communities a way to report safety threats or potential acts of violence. SafeOregon will give students another path for communicating with school administration when school safety incidents occur.
How does SafeOregon work?
Students, parents, and school staff can access SafeOregon through the web form on the SafeOregon website, or by text, email, live call and mobile app.
Why is there a need for a tip line system?
The number one reason why students do not report is the fear of retaliation from their peers. SafeOregon can be accessed from the privacy of a phone, home computer or other Internet equipped device, eliminating the possibility of being identified by another student and thus, decreasing the likelihood that a school safety threat would go unreported.
For more information, please visit the District’s SafeOregon Tipline webpage.
Important Volunteer Reminders
Volunteers are an important part of the WE in the District’s goal of WE empower all students to achieve post-high school success. Thank you very much for sharing your valuable time and talents with students and staff.
As a reminder, for the safety and welfare of students and staff, ALL volunteer activities must be coordinated and tracked through myvolunteerpage.com, the District’s online volunteer management system. Volunteers must sign in and sign out through the volunteer computer located in the school front office.
To use the computer sign in, you need the username and password you created for the Volunteer and Background Check Application process. To retrieve, or reset either of these, go to myvolunteerpage.com and click on the “Forgot Username or Password” link. Your username and a temporary password will be emailed to you. To create a new permanent password, click on the “My Profile” tab on your myvolunteerpage.com home page. Please write down and save these for future use.
Parent/Guardian Volunteers, your Myvolunteerpage profile is NOT linked to your student(s) information and will not follow you to different locations. If you would like to add or remove a school from your profile, please send an email to update_volunteer_locations@beaverton.k12.or.us indicating the changes you would like made.
If you are no longer volunteering, you can also email update_volunteer_locations@beaverton.k12.or.us and indicate that you would like to remove your profile from the system.
Please note, your volunteer profile will be archived if you have not logged hours on your profile, or have not signed in through the volunteer computer for two (2) years after initially being cleared by the District to volunteer.
Immunization Exclusion Day – February 21, 2018
State law requires that all children in public and private schools, preschools, Head Start and certified child care facilities have up-to-date immunizations, or have a medical exemption. Parents wanting to claim a non-medical exemption to a vaccine need to either complete the vaccine online training or receive the training from their physician and provide proof of this training. Parents or guardians will receive a letter in early February if their child's immunization record shows that he or she has not received the required vaccinations.
Parents or guardians will receive a letter in early February if their child's immunization record shows that he or she has not received the required vaccinations. Children will not be able to attend school or childcare starting February 21, 2018, if their records on file show missing immunizations.

WE Collaborate: Future Ready Team & Nike Partner to Innovate Classrooms
Innovation Strategists Ryan Hoxie and Katie White have developed a partnership with Nike to reimagine classroom spaces throughout the District. The collaboration has created a sustainable resource for teachers to choose slightly used furniture that Nike is no longer using to innovate their classroom and library spaces.
Last June, Ryan and Katie worked with the Beaverton School District Facilities Department, Teaching & Learning Department, the Future Ready team and Stephanie Tucker an Operations Specialist at Nike to develop a process for schools to tour the warehouse and select furniture based on need. Six dates were selected for Innovation Strategists to accompany up to three teachers, administrators or staff from their schools to visit the warehouse and select furniture items to be used in classrooms and common spaces in their schools. The following Friday, the BSD Facilities courier team picks up the selected items from the Nike warehouse and delivers them to the schools.
“We get a lot of furniture from all over our campuses that are still in really good condition but are not deployable. My job is to work with local nonprofits and school districts to ensure this material stays out of the landfill,” says Stephanie. “The walkthrough and pick up schedule that has been developed with the Beaverton School District has really worked out to be very beneficial to everyone.”
The most popular items are flexible seating options like tall stools, ottomans and comfortable chairs and writeable surfaces like whiteboard tables. “It’s such a fantastic opportunity for so many teachers who have in the past tried to use their own money to purchase things, or to write grants. Opening this process up for all elementary and middle schools has really worked great,” says Katie.
