The Madison PTA Newsletter
Dear Madison Parents
It is my pleasure as principal to welcome you back to Madison Elementary. The Madison staff is looking forward to a great year and we have enjoyed seeing your children this last week!
Welcome New Families…This has been a very busy and exciting month here in the office as SO many new Mountain Lions have joined us at Madison this school year. We have the opportunity to host students from around the district into our two All-Day Kindergartens and our Instructional Kindergarten class. We also have seen a great number of new faces from near and far enter our other classes as well. Please extend a welcome and helping hand to our new families and help to show them why the Madison community is such a special place for kids.
Welcome New Staff…We also have many new professionals joining the Madison staff this year. Jessica Brown joins us in the PACE program. Coleen Stewart is teaching kindergarten. Olivia Gjeldum is teaching first grade. They all come to us with very positive, prior teaching experiences. Kelsey Bergeson joins our special education teaching staff. Jenny Boyd and Allison Burns will be assisting students in fourth and first grade, respectively. Joining the office team is Kim Bestwina. You will most likely hear her voice when you call school. And, finally, Samantha Mitchell will be with us for a period of time while she substitutes in the Instructional Kindergarten class this year.
Arrival and Dismissal Reminders… Please remember the following important safety needs:
• Students must not be unattended on school grounds before 9 a.m.
• Students leaving Madison for lunch must have a written note.
• Mayo Drive is treated as a one-way street during arrival and dismissal times.
• Parents may not park or leave their cars in the loading zone during arrival or dismissal.
Curriculum Night – Sept. 4 … Curriculum Night structure will be different this year for two reasons. Most importantly, we hope that parents with many children will be able to attend all classroom presentations. Secondly, I also have much to share with parents this year. I hope that by offering parents the opportunity to learn about Common Core, our new report cards, and standards-based grading; we can have a stronger partnership in educating your children.

New District 200 Wellness Policy… You may be aware that District 200 adopted a new Wellness Policy this summer. Madison had already enacted many of the measures taken in this new policy, but the policy will cause some minor changes for us here.
For FAQ, go to www.cusd200.org, click “departments,” click “student services,” then click “wellness.”
I thank you for your support as we strive to provide a healthy environment for all.
I look forward to seeing everyone during these first weeks of school. As always, if I can be of assistance please do not hesitate to reach me by phone, email or in person.
