Updates from the School Counseling Office
Course Selections for 2023-2024:
Counselors are still working with students one-on-one to schedule for next year (primarily juniors). If you have not already met with your counselor, please be sure you are prepared for your meeting with a minimum of 5 courses per semester. Once your student has had their meeting, they (and you) will be able to view next year's course selections in PowerSchool under the "class registration" tab. This is just a listing of courses, not a schedule with assigned periods. If needed, adjustments to this listing can be made in March.
Seniors:
Please take a look at the School Counseling website for information on local scholarships. Deadlines are quickly approaching. Don't miss out! The listing of scholarships is updated frequently--check often!

Congratulations Mr. Stimmell!
Each year, the Ohio FFA recognizes 10 teachers in Ohio as Golden Owl Honorees. This year's selection committee has chosen Big Walnut High School's Jeff Stimmell (out of over 100 nominees) as one of the 10 honorees to be recognized. This award is presented by Ohio FFA, Nationwide, Ohio Farm Bureau, Farm Credit Mid-America and AgCredit, ACA. The intention of the award is to recognize teachers who have made a significant difference in the lives of students and in their community through their dedication to the profession. Mr. Stimmell will submit a final application to be considered for the Ohio Ag Educator of the Year, announced later this spring. Congratulations Mr. Stimmell! We wish you luck as you pursue the Golden Owl Trophy!
More FFA Accolades!
Congratulations to Big Walnut's winners at the Sub-District Public Speaking CDEs. All three of our students placed in the top three and have advanced to compete next week at the district level.
Senior Maddy Jones participated in the Extemporaneous category where she drew a topic randomly and had 30 minutes to prepare a speech. Junior Lilly Cappitte participated in the Advanced Prepared category where she wrote and presented her speech on the agriculture industry's future. Lilly placed first overall. And freshman Savannah Durheim participated in the Creed category, reciting the FFA Creed from memory and answering questions from judges. Savannah placed first and earned a perfect score from the judges.
Congratulations to all three and best of luck next week as they compete for a chance at advancing to the state level!

BWHS Academic Boosters
Academic Boosters - who are we? We are a group of organized parents who provide support to help improve the academic experience for all students, parents, and staff at BWHS. We provide An Evening of Excellence in September to recognize sophomores, juniors, and seniors who earned a 3.5 GPA the previous year. We sponsor the annual Academic and Military Signing in the spring for graduating seniors who have been offered college scholarships and graduating seniors who have enlisted in Military Services. Students who earn a 5 on their AP exam receive a High Five yard sign provided by and delivered to their home by members of the Academic Boosters. Our staff at BWHS is crucial to the success of our students and the academic booster parents show them just how much we appreciate them by providing a few very small tokens of appreciation during staff appreciation week in April. We have many other ideas of ways we can expand and continue to support the academic efforts of our students and staff! We are looking forward to a productive and fun year!
Meetings are typically at 6:30pm on the second Monday of each month. (No December meeting.) This year, our meetings are as follows: 3/13, 4/3, and 5/8.
