Course Selection for 10th Grade
I will be visiting your World History classes again within the next 2 weeks for you to make some initial decisions about which electives you will take next year. So begin thinking about whether you want to continue with your current electives next year or try some new ones. (or a combination of these)
I am looking forward to seeing you again soon. If there is an elective you are really curious about taking next year, go talk with the teacher about this course. I am sure he or she would be glad to chat with you about their program. If you don't know where their room is or would like their email I can share that information with you. So I say all of this to say be prepared to make preliminary choices about your electives for next year soon!
Vaping
33 people across the U.S. have died from vaping-related illnesses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and nearly 1,500 have been sickened.
Here is an article that explains some of the dangers regarding vaping and below is a video from CBS news about how vaping can cause major lung problems for users. Please take a moment to read/view these!

First, it is important to check your Student Portal several times each week. Checking your portal frequently ensures that you know what your current average is in each of your classes. You can also see if you have any missing assignments that you may have forgotten about. There are deadlines every few weeks for missing work. If we get to December and you still have missing assignments it will be too late to turn in an assignment back from August or September. If you’re not sure if an assignment can still be turned in, just ask your teacher.
Second, if you have failed 2 or more tests or quizzes in one particular class then attending Tutoring with that teacher could really help! Each teacher offers tutoring at least once a week, usually after school. Tutoring sessions often only have 4 or 5 students so you can get more one-on-one help from your teacher. I have found that for students struggling in their math class that tutoring can be the difference between passing and failing.
Speaking of extra help another great way to better understand the material in your classes is through Khan Academy. Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that allows students to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. Khan offers help in most every subject-math, science, history and more. Go to www.khanacademy.org to create your account and get started.
I also recommend using a planner or calendar to write down your homework each night and to write in the dates for major projects and exams. Bring your planner to each class and write this information in your planner as soon as your teacher announces upcoming homework, project, quizzes or tests. Be sure to take it home with you and review it each day to see what is due tomorrow and the upcoming days and weeks ahead.
Another tip we recommend is to study a little bit each night instead of waiting for the night before a test or quiz. By studying say just 10 to 15 minutes for one of your classes each night you will actually end up studying LESS than if you stay up cramming the night before the test. This is because you won’t have to learn the information all over again-you’ll just be reviewing it basically. And you’ll be less STRESSED and get more sleep which is very important in order to do your best on a test.
Finally, take responsibility for your own learning. This means asking your teacher questions when you don’t understand something. Chances are there are several students who have the same question you do and will be glad you asked it. If you are still struggling with a class after taking several of these steps then be sure to let your counselor know.
