Superstars!
Thank you for all the Fun Run pictures posted by parents on our Facebook page. It was a great experience, and the kids were shattered for the rest of the day! Our playgrounds have been totally transformed over the past few years due to this event, and the dogged work of the PTA. The kids gave it their all as they ran, thanks for the pledges!
A big shout out to another parent for donating fidgets/therapeutic items to help children calm themselves during overwhelming periods. These have already been put into action, and are now part of my teaching essentials. Thank you!
Many of you said that you would like to volunteer in the classroom this year. We are beginning Guided Reading this week during our Literacy Center hour, and it is wonderful to have an extra adult in the room while Ms. Hughes and I are leading small groups. It involves aiding half of the class at one time with their literacy center work. Literacy Centers are 9:50-10:50 each day. I already have a volunteer for Wednesdays, if anyone else would like to sign up for a day or more please email me. This opportunity is also open to Grandmas/Grandpas!
It was wonderful conferencing with many of you last week. Thank you for being understanding for having to reschedule due to my sickness. If you haven't managed to make an appointment with me yet, please email/call me because I need to share lots of information with you about your child (and to brag on them to you!)
A Look At Our Week....
In our Fundations program we are working on the letters/sounds a and g. We are also working on phonemic awareness skills such as rhyming and syllables.
In Writing last week we invited Ms. Morgan's second graders into our classroom to be writing buddies. It was a wonderful thing to see big kids patiently listening as our little ones read them their work. The second graders also inspired the Kindergarteners by sharing their work with them in turn. We will be partnering with a third grade class for reading buddies in a couple of weeks.
We are doing a research project on Owls this month too, and the children have been using the Pebblego site (it's like a children's encyclopedia) on the iPads to conduct their research. We will be producing our final piece of work this week for the bulletin board.
Guided Reading groups will be beginning for some students this week. We will be working on using the picture and the first sound of a word to work out what the word is. This strategy is called "cross-checking". Your children will be working with books that are suitable for their own level of reading. I hope that you have been enjoying working with the readers coming home this week. We change them out every day, so please send them back in their folder daily. Your child can color a pumpkin each night that he/she reads. They will earn their treasure box goody on Friday for 5 pumpkins colored.
In Math, we continue to count and learn how to record our findings in a myriad of ways. We are working on vocabulary/understanding of "more" and "less", when comparing numbers and objects. We will be assessing your child's number identification knowledge this week. The goal for rote counting for the end of this month is 30. Check that your child can do this easily by having them count when you're waiting somewhere. It keeps them out of trouble!
