A Year of Gratitude

From the Principal...
Dear Seton Families,
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Bullying is defined as an intentional behavior that hurts, harms, or humiliates a student, either physically or emotionally, and can happen while at school, in the community, or online. Those bullying often have more social or physical “power,” while those targeted have difficulty stopping the behavior. The behavior is typically repeated, though it can be a one-time incident.
Bullying is different from conflict.
- Conflict is a disagreement or argument in which both sides express their views.
- Bullying is negative behavior directed by someone exerting power and control over another person.
Bullying is done with a goal to hurt, harm, or humiliate. With bullying, there is often a power imbalance between those involved, with power defined as elevated social status, being physically larger, or as part of a group against an individual. Students who bully perceive their target as vulnerable in some way and often find satisfaction in harming them.
In normal conflict, children self-monitor their behavior. They read cues to know if lines are crossed, and then modify their behavior in response. Children guided by empathy usually realize they have hurt someone and will want to stop their negative behavior. On the other hand, children intending to cause harm and whose behavior goes beyond normal conflict will continue their behavior even when they know it's hurting someone.
Bullying and harassment are often used interchangeably when talking about hurtful or harmful behavior. They are very similar, but in terms of definition, there is an important difference.
Bullying and harassment are similar as they are both about:
- power and control
- actions that hurt or harm another person physically or emotionally
- an imbalance of power between the target and the individual demonstrating the negative behavior
- the target having difficulty stopping the action directed at them
The distinction between bullying and harassment is that when the bullying behavior directed at the target is also based on a protected class, that behavior is then defined as harassment. Protected classes include race, color, religion, sex, age, disability and national origin.
Peer pressure occurs when a peer group or individual encourages others to change their attitudes, values, or behaviors to conform to those of the influencing group or individual.
Peer pressure can impact bullying behavior both in positive and negative ways. For example, the influence can have negative effects if a peer group’s bullying behavior encourages others to laugh at someone. It can also be negative when the group views other individuals as not worthy to be part of their group. The impact of negative peer pressure can create environments in which individuals are intimidated to speak out on behalf of someone being hurt or harmed.
Peer pressure can also be positive and healthy. For example, when the peer group encourages kind and inclusive behavior, such as inviting others to join them at the lunch table or letting someone know that they care what is happening to them. The action of peers encouraging each other to reach out to those who are struggling can have a positive impact on the group and other individuals who want to speak out against bullying.
At Seton Catholic, students are encouraged to reach out and welcome all into our community. We have initiated a number of new programs and resources to teach and encourage empathy, kindness, problem solving, self-regulation, and repairing the harm of our negative behavior. Encourage your child(ren) to welcome rather than exclude others, to be understanding and empathetic to differences, and to report issues to an adult he or she trusts.
Thank you for being a part of our Seton Catholic School Community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Stephanie Nardi, Principal

From the Board President...
My name is Paul Schweigl, and I am the president of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School Board for the 2019-20 school year. I am chair of the theology department at Roncalli High School, where I have taught since 2011. My wife, Carrie, and I are members of Holy Name of Jesus Parish along with our kids, Elijah and Veronica (future Seton students!).
In my professional capacity as a theology teacher, I have had many opportunities to interact with graduates of Seton, and I have always come away impressed. Seton alumni consistently distinguish themselves through their willingness to learn, their knowledge of the Catholic faith, and the respect with which they treat others in our school community. In short, the presence of Seton graduates in my classroom has made it a better learning environment, without a doubt.
To what, or to whom, do I attribute this success? First and foremost, to the young men and women themselves, and the families who raised them. Secondly, to the teachers they had throughout their grade school years. It is clear to me that our teachers at Seton are professionals of the highest quality, who have done top-notch work from the time Seton was founded, despite several transitions over the history of our school. Finally, I believe our parish communities deserve a great deal of credit for the success of our school and the graduates it churns out.
A top priority of the school board this year is to develop a strategic plan to guide our school for the next few years. If you have any thoughts regarding what Seton does well, or how we might improve, please do not hesitate to send me an email at schweiglp@sheboyganseton.org.
Peace and All Good,
Paul Schweigl

Safety for All
Please help us by following school policies and procedures. Parents, volunteers, and visitors MUST sign in at the office when they are in the school from 7:45 to 3:00. The only exception to this is the drop-off of a child in 4K or kindergarten. Those early childhood students may be walked to their classrooms beginning at 7:45. Any children in grades 1-8 should NOT be accompanied by a parent or guardian into the hallways. We will make an exception to this on the first week of school. Parents and guardians are welcome to drop-off forgotten items or leave messages for their children in the school office during the day. While you are welcome to come in for lunch with your child, please stop in the office to sign in when you arrive and sign out when you leave.
Door access during school hours is restricted. From 7:30 to 8am the front main doors on Superior and the back door off of the playground will be unlocked for student entry. Prior to 7:30, all doors will be locked to the building.
At 7:55am the back door will be locked. All students or guests arriving after 7:55am must enter through the main doors on Superior Avenue and go to the office to sign in. At no time during school hours, 7:30am to 3:30pm, should anyone be entering any of our other doors even if they have a key to the building. The main doors on Superior Avenue are the only allowed entrance from 7:55am to 3:30pm.
Together we can keep all of students and staff.
Drop-off and Pick-up
When picking up your children at the end of the day, our procedures are the same as last school year. In the back parking lot the drive through lane is for entering and exiting the lot only. There should be no students entering or exiting a vehicle in this lane.
Students in grades 5-8 may walk to a parked vehicle and may escort a younger sibling. Students in grades K-4 will remain behind the cones to be picked up by a parent or guardian. 4K students should be picked up in their classroom.
