School Safety and Safety Drill Information
We are proud to serve you and your children, and we will continually strive to provide a safe learning environment for all students at West Cypress Hills Elementary.
The safety of your children, school staff, and visitors is very important to all of us. In order to maintain a safe learning environment, it is necessary that we practice our emergency and crisis response plans by having drills designed to exercise our procedures.
Although we have been conducting various drills throughout the school year, this communication is intended to help you understand the importance of these drills as well as to understand each type of drill. The students and staff at WCHE practice three primary emergency drills each year: fire drills, lockdown drills, and shelter-in-place drills. Each type of drill is explained below.
Fire Drills
Our school will conduct a fire drill each month that school is in session. We want each student to understand and be aware of the importance of this drill and not be afraid when the fire alarm is activated. By practicing, our students will become familiar with these expectations should a real emergency occur.
Lockdown Drills
Our school will conduct one Lockdown drill each semester of the school year. During a Lockdown event, we will secure the campus and shelter all students, staff, and visitors from possible danger inside or outside of our school building. All perimeter doors to the school building will be locked and will remain locked until the threat has been contained and/or removed. No one will be allowed to enter or exit the building until the authorities (or school district officials) authorize such a release.
Please be advised, a Lockdown drill is scheduled for this Wednesday, December 12. Our teachers will inform students in advance so that they can be adequately prepared.
Shelter-in-Place Drills
The shelter-in-place drill will be conducted one time per semester each school year. The purpose of this drill is to prepare staff and students to move to a safe location within the building in case of severe weather.
Please know that we conduct these drills to support a safe learning environment for all, and it is always our intent to do so with minimal disruption to our school activities. Your patience, understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated.
Should you have any questions or concerns regarding these drills, please contact your child’s teacher, Amanda Beninga, Assistant Principal, or Amanda Prehn, Principal, at 512-533-7500.

The Wall of Fame for Shoe Tying for Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Graders
Once notified of the student's successful shoe-tying accomplishment, we will provide your student with a paper shoe to color, take the student's photo, and then post the photo and customized paper shoe on our WALL OF FAME FOR SHOE TYING!
It's going to be really exciting to see our young Tigers on the WALL OF FAME!
Brrrrrr! It's cold, and we may have all of your coats!
Our Lost & Found is running over with all manner of lovely sweaters, sweatshirts, and coats. We also have lots of water bottles, lunch boxes, and even eyeglasses.
If you are missing any of your worldly goods, please stop by and check our Lost & Found. It could well be that your missing items are here.
And, speaking of cold, our clinic needs new or gently used leggings, shorts, and pants
Nurse Hensel, as the keeper of the wardrobe, has reported a need for small, medium and large girls' leggings. She also needs, for boys and/or girls, small, medium, and large athletic shorts and pants.
We would appreciate your keeping Nurse Hensel's needs in mind if you have gently used clothing that your children no longer need. Many thanks!
Play WCHE Book BINGO! Keep On Reading On, Tigers@
