Bring on the Sunshine
March 2 - 6
Monthly Focus: R*E*S*P*E*C*T
EVERY class has a Cat in the Hat hat for your students to wear on Monday - even 5th grade - Becky was able to find more!
"A single, ordinary person still can make a difference - and single, ordinary people are doing precisely that every day."
Message from Mrs. Hafey.....
We are starting a new month and continue with the adventures that the teaching days can bring. As the year progresses, we enter into a tougher part of the school year - so just a few reminders:
1. Smile - it is contagious
2. Seek first to understand
3. Don't be quick to take something personal
4. Be supportive of your colleagues - if you see a need - offer to help if you can
5. Stop and be mindful - enjoy the moment
6. Keep what is important - important (your students)
Thank you fro all you do. You are why Sunset is great and why our students are learning! You have the most important job EVER!
Love ya all,
Hafey
Think About: As you are working the room during math time - don't carry a pencil! If you are not carrying a pencil, you can't jump in to save a student by 'doing' it for them!

Amplify Reading
You may have noticed a new button when you logged into mCLASS to look at your students’ progress monitoring scores. Our district has received a free trial of Amplify Reading. This is a program the provides students with practice on foundational reading skills. The integration with mCLASS means that your students are already set up to utilize this practice opportunity with minimal work on your part. Students are initially placed in the program according to their most recent benchmark score. Students move through the games that will provide practice on the needed skills based on each student.
It is easy to get your students using Amplify Reading. When you log into mCLASS, you will see the tile labeled Amplify Reading (the first aqua-colored tile). Choose your class from the dropdown list in the top left corner. You will have a demo class as well as your class on this list. Click on the gear next to the words class details. You will see a screen that allows you to print QR codes for the students or you can choose to have your students use a class code to log in. This program is web-based which means that no matter what device students use (iPads or computers), they will log in from a website: reading.amplify.com. This website needs to be bookmarked on your devices.
This program would be a great addition to small group rotations. Once your students have done some work in the program, we can share more about how to read the teacher dashboard. Here is the launch packet provided by Amplify with detailed instructions.

Productive Struggle
Tasks that lead to PRODUCTIVE STRUGGLE are the tasks that are within reach but that present enough challenge, so there is something new to figure out.
PRODUCTIVE STRUGGLE = Opportunity to grow your brain
By allowing PRODUCTIVE STRUGGLE the opportunity to lead students through question become possible - honoring and building on the thinking of students without removing the demands of the task or doing the thinking for our students.
NOT allowing PRODUCTIVE STRUGGLE undermines their own confidence in solving problems.
