Thoughts for our work at JMS

“Children know what they know. They bring what they bring. Our job is not to wish that students knew more or knew differently. Our job is to turn students’ individual knowledge – and the collective range of knowledge the whole class brings – into a curricular strength, rather than to regard it as an instructional inconvenience. We can do that only if we hold high expectations for all students, convey great respect for the knowledge, language, and culture each brings to the classroom, and offer support in helping each student achieve those high expectations.”

Eric Cooper (National Urban Alliance for Effective Education) and David Pearson

responding to a letter in a previous issue on the impact of poverty

Clubs & Activities Update

It is amazing the amount of clubs and activities offered by our team! We are really going to get our students engaged and connected with JMS! Thank you for volunteering your time to support the development of the whole child. Just a few updates:

All proposals for clubs are due by April 30th. The document we shared is in draft format. If you need to make any edits, please let me know. The google share allows you to make comments directly on the document.

Here are a few things to consider:

We have one gym and basketball season is October - February. More than likely, the gym will not be available for clubs/activities during this time.

We also have morning tutoring sessions (Tuesdays: MA/SS and Wednesdays: LA/SC).

Jordan MS Team Meetings will be on the last Friday of the Month at 8:15 AM (if we have a holiday, then the last Friday school is in session that month).

The leadership team will review all proposals and make final recommendations.

Thank you again!

Capture our story!

We need a team who would like to capture our "firsts" as we begin on our journey as Jordan Middle School. Please email Dr. Walker if you are interested in serving in this capacity. Your first opportunity will be at our inaugural staff retreat on May 16th.

Staff Retreat, May 16th BYOT

We will have our first staff retreat on Saturday, May 16th! We will meet at Jenkins Elementary Cafe beginning at 8:00 AM with a Belgian Waffle Breakfast! We are asking you to BYOT: bring your own topping! Be creative! Bring yummy toppings like blueberries, whip cream, chocolate syrup, powdered sugar, Nutella, syrup, etc!

The purpose of our retreat is to get to know our team members, engage in some vision, mission, and purpose work, along with receiving information. We plan on meeting from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Show your Black Knight spirit by dressing in black and gold!

Jenkins is located at 12 Village Way, Lawrenceville, GA 30046 (on the same campus as Jordan Middle School).

Do you BYOD?

BYOD: Bring your own device to our May 16th Retreat! We will be using our devices at different times throughout the morning. Please make sure to have a QR code reader on your device.
