Notes from East Hill Elementary
February 3, 2023
Message from East Hill Principal
Dear East Hill Families,
I hope everyone is staying warm on the very cold day! We had a great week at East Hill. This weather is making getting outdoors for PE and sledding difficult but we will continue to try. Please see the new addition to our weekly newsletter below from our Physical Education teacher, Mrs. O'Keefe. This week includes information on ways to stay active during these winter months and a yummy recipe for a healthy snack!
I have also included a picture of Ms. Button's grade 4 class together with Ms. York's kindergarten class. As part of their poetry unit, Ms. Button's class recently read, I Hear America Singing, by Walt Whitman. After reading and discussing the poem, the students made a "remix" of the poem. Their version of the poem is about East Hill which they wrote after an observational walk around the school. The goal was for the students to pay attention and observe as many different things as possible that people are doing throughout the school. They made a stop in Mrs. York's kindergarten room. The 4th graders really impressed us with their finished products of, I Hear My School Singing and the kindergarten students loved hearing the completed poems!
Please see the change in next week's menu below.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Susan Meskos

Health and Wellness Update from PE
From Mrs. O'Keefe:
There are many ways to stay active in the winter months in our community. Fresh air and exercise benefits our emotional, mental and physical health especially during the colder months. Shove park offers “Open Skate” on Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00-5:00 and also offers rental skates for a low price. You can visit the Camillus Parks and Recreation website for more information or call 315-487-2170.
An easy, healthy snack that kids will enjoy and can help make:
Peanut Butter Energy Balls:
2 cups rolled oats
1 cup peanut butter (or other nut butter)
½ cup honey
¼ cup mini chocolate chips (or dried fruit)
¼ cup unsweetened shredded coconut
Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl; stir well. Using a 1 tablespoon measure, roll the mixture into balls. Serve. (To store-place in airtight container in the refrigerator)

Yearbook Orders
Kindergarten Registration NOW OPEN!
Kindergarten Registration for the 2023-2024 school year opened virtually on December 14, 2022 and will go until March 31, 2023. This will allow our families to register their children from the comfort of their homes or office. Please click here to start the Virtual Registration process. This will schedule a telemeeting with you.
When registering, parents should be prepared to upload the following:
- proof of residency (ie. mortgage or property statement or signed lease agreement)
- proof of immunizations
- proof of age
A physical examination is also required and a dental certificate is requested for entry into kindergarten. These examinations should be done up to one year prior to the first day of school. Children who enter kindergarten this fall must be five years of age on or before December 1, 2023.

UPK Registration is NOW OPEN
West Genesee partners with local Community-Based Organizations (CBO) for its Pre-K program. Currently, there is one classroom at Split Rock Elementary and 5 classrooms with our CBOs. The number of available seats is dependent on the UPK allocation the District receives from NYS. The State Budget is adopted on or near April 1.
To be eligible for UPK during the 2023-2024 school year, a child must:
- Have a birthdate between December 2, 2018 and December 1, 2019
- Reside in the West Genesee Central School District
In the event that more registrations are received than can be accommodated, the district will conduct an initial selection process via an open lottery in which children will be selected at random.
Those children who have completed the registration process by March 17 will be part of the initial selection process.
Families who were part of the initial selection process will be called in order of selection and informed:
- whether their child has been accepted to the program, and
- which site (including hours of the program) is available for their child;
OR
- where their child is on the waiting list.
Families will be contacted by April 14, 2023.
If at any point after the initial selection process there are more students registered than seats available, students will be placed on the waiting list in the order that their registration was completed.
Transportation to and from the program is the responsibility of parents/guardians, and students must attend the program five days a week to maintain their seat.
Look for registration information on the Central Registration webpage at: https://www.westgenesee.org/district-services/registration/. If you have any questions, email the Central Registrar at centralregistrar@westgenesee.org, or call Central Registration at (315) 487-4683.
When registering, parents should be prepared to upload the following:
- proof of residency (ie. mortgage or property statement or signed lease agreement)
- proof of immunizations
- proof of age
