Rocket Report
March 30, 2020
School buildings closed through May 1
BUT....Teaching and learning and support are OPEN!
Rocket students & staff continue to Rock-it!
As we move through this unprecedented time together, I want to keep you in the loop on some important issues.
Governor Extends School Building Closure
At his 2 PM press conference today, Governor DeWine indicated that all Ohio K-12 school buildings will be closed through Friday, May 1st. Therefore, Benton-Carroll-Salem School District buildings will be closed until May 1. All activities and events are cancelled until May 1.
That said, we don't need buildings to have high quality education. Teaching and learning remain open for business! Our Remote Instruction Plan will continue through May 1. Teachers and students will continue their work together.
Teachers will continue to be available to students/parents for assistance, including help with technology issues. We have administration and staff in our buildings during normal work hours to answer phones and help students and parents with school work.
Does the work of students during Remote Instruction Count?
Yes, the Remote Instruction school work that students are completing does count! According to HB 197, the teaching and learning taking place remotely (both online and paper based) will count, and will allow us to consider these days as “in-session” school days even though students are not reporting to a physical school building. Therefore, the district is not anticipating making up school days in the summer.
Regular B-C-S Meal Service Continues Monday-Friday
Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools continues its free meal service for students. All students can get both breakfast and lunch Monday--Friday at no charge. Parents or caregivers may pick-up meals without their child present, but will need to provide the students name and address for verification. The drive through service for all students (including Penta students) will take place at R.C. Waters Elementary School between the hours of 9:00 AM and 12:00 Noon, Monday through Friday. Meals being picked up do not need to be ordered ahead. If you are unable to pick up your child's meal, you may request delivery to your home by calling 419-898-6219. If you need a delivery please call between 8--10 AM. Again, the breakfast and lunch meals will be free for all B-C-S students.
Holidays
April 10 (Good Friday) and April 13 (Easter Monday) will still be holidays. We do not expect teaching and learning to be happening on these days. There will be no meal service on April 10 and April 13, but we will be sending extra food home on Thursday, April 9.
Mental Health and Well Being
These are challenging times for adults, and more so for young people. If you think your child can benefit from talking to a counselor, please do not hesitate to call your child's school on March 30 or after. I also want to remind you of the Crisis Text Line:
Text HOME to 741741 from anywhere in the United States, anytime, about any type of crisis.
One suggestion for our overall mental health is for us to all get outside and walk, or do some kind of physical activity (while practicing social distancing). Something as simple as a walk can do wonders for the mood and help with anxiety.
What is happening with Commencement for the Class of 2020?
Commencement is a seminal moment in the lives of young people! We may have to postpone the OHHS Commencement (May 17) due to an Ohio Department of Health Order limiting the number of people who can get together. We are considering options and alternatives if we are forced to postpone Commencement. We will strive to have a traditional, face to face Commencement. We believe our Class of 2020 deserves to have this memory and recognition! Stay tuned.
What has been postponed?
Here are some of the major events that have been postponed:
- -Ottawa County Top Ten Banquet set for April 15: Postponed--to be determined.
- -Kindergarten Screening set for April 8-9: Postponed--to be determined.
- -HS Prom: Postponed--to be determined

Entrance age to Kindergarten Change
2/27/2020
TO: All Stakeholders
I am writing to make you aware that the school district has changed its policy on the entrance age to Kindergarten. Effectively immediately, each child who is five years of age on or before August 1 is eligible to enroll in Kindergarten.
Prior to this, students had to be five years of age on or before September 30.
The district has made this change based on Kindergarten readiness research, and upon the recommendation of the staff and administration of R.C. Waters Elementary School. This change is in the best interests of students who will enter Kindergarten, and will improve the prospects of their educational career. This change to August 1st also puts Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools in line with the vast majority of school districts in our area.
Sincerely,
Guy L. Parmigian
Superintendent
