Happy Holidays
Turner Creek Staff would like to wish all our families Happy Holidays! We hope everyone has a safe and restful break and we will see Tracks 1, 2 & 3 back on January 2, 2019 and Track 4 on January 28, 2019!
Student Drop Off Reminder
Please remember that students should not be dropped off before 8:45. The only exceptions are if they are involved in a before school activity. Students should not be dropped off to wait outside of the school! We encourage walkers not to arrive at school before 8:45 as well.
5th Grade Families and Middle School
Parents of rising 6th graders,
We have posted information from some of the area middle schools about their Open Houses and application information on our website. Go to the Parent Links on the main page of our website, scroll down and look for “Middle School Open House Information” and click on the link. Check back often as we post updates often.
Magnet School Application Period
The Magnet window for 2019-2020 is January 4-January 30. Your child must be a registered student to be able to apply. For more information click on the link below:
Track change requests for 2019-2020
TCE will accept "Track Change Requests" for the 2019-20 school year from Jan. 2, 2019 thru Feb. 1, 2019 ONLY. Requests submitted after Feb. 1, 2019 will not be considered. The Track Change Request forms are available on our website or in our main office. It is also attached at the bottom of this Ribbit Report. All requests will be considered, and changes will be made based on availability. Results will be emailed to parents on Feb. 11, 2019.
***Please note that if you need a track change for a rising middle school student, you MUST complete a track change request at the middle school. We can not guarantee siblings will be on the same track if requests are not made at BOTH schools.***
Jump Rope for Heart
Turner Creek Elementary will be participating in Jump Rope For Heart to help raise funds for the American Heart Association. The donations that are received will be used by the American Heart Association for research and educational programs to save lives from heart disease and stroke! Raising contributions is voluntary. All students will participate in a special jump rope day during a regular PE class time in February.
Family and friends are welcome to support your child’s participation by making contributions. You can go to heart.org/kidsheartchallenge so that your child can take one of the three challenges and email family and friends to ask for donations. Please convert all cash to a check(s) payable to the American Heart Association. Don’t forget to ask donors if their employers have matching gift programs. This is an easy way to increase the contributions your child collects.
Contribution envelopes must be returned to Mr. Whilden by Friday, February 22 for all tracks.
Spring Chess Club
As our Fall Chess Club has ended, we are looking ahead to our Spring Chess Club! Chess club is available to students in 1st through 5th grade. Students will learn chess fundamentals and strategies that enhance learning skills and critical thinking. We will build confidence and have the option to compete against other local schools. Chess club, taught by Triangle Chess, will last 12 weeks. 1st-2nd grades will be every Tuesday morning at 8:10am starting January 29 and 3rd-5th grades will be every Thursday morning at 8:10am starting January 31. Earning Money for Turner Creek while you Shop
Did you know that Turner Creek can earn money when you shop at Harris Teeter? Plus it costs you nothing. Simply link your Harris Teeter VIC card to Turner Creek Elementary.
Even if you have done this in the past, you must re-link the card every August in order for the school to continue to benefit. You can do this in one of three ways:
1. By logging into your Harris Teeter account here and adding Turner Creek # 5647 under the Together in Education section
2. By asking the cashier or the customer service desk representative to link your card to our school the next time you visit Harris Teeter
3. By asking your PTA to do it for you. Just email your VIC card # and the last name and phone number associated with your account to fundraising@tce-pta.org
Turner Creek is also enrolled in the Lowes Foods Cart to Class program. You can link your Lowes Foods Fresh Rewards Card to Turner Creek here.
We recently signed up for the Publix Partners program. You can log into your Publix account here and link to Turner Creek in the My Publix Partner section.
Thanks for your support, and please consider asking your friends and family members to link their cards to our school, too.
From Turner Creek PTA Advocacy Committee
As the largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the nation, National PTA is the conscience of the country for children and youth issues. Through advocacy, as well as family and community education, National PTA has established programs and called for legislation that improves our children’s lives, such as:
- Creation of Kindergarten classes
- Child labor laws
- Public health service
- Hot and healthy lunch programs
- Juvenile justice system
- Mandatory immunization
- Arts in Education
- School Safety
On the local level, there are many ways you can be involved in advocacy efforts. You probably know that there are bi-monthly school board meetings (calendar is here https://www.wcpss.net/Page/3729) but there are also BAC's (Board Advisory Council Meetings). Turner Creek is in District 8, with Lindsey Mahaffey as our representative. The next BAC for District 8 is on January 22 from 6:00-7:30pm at Holly Grove Middle School. The BAC's are a smaller, more intimate meeting. If you would like to join me in attending this event, email Lisa Mead at Advocacy@wakepta.org.
