Merrill Elementary Math Update
January 2020
How does Bridges, our math program, build mathematical thinkers?
Our program focuses on developing students' deep understanding of mathematical concepts, proficiency with key skills, and their ability to solve complex problems through Number Corner, Problems and Investigations, and Work Places. The math content is presented in a rigorous and engaging manner, while making it accessible to all learners. One of the most important ways we make the math accessible is with the use of concrete materials and models to help students visualize the mathematical problems they are exploring. Here are some of the important models used in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Ask your student if he or she uses these in class!
The Five-Frame
The Ten Frame
The Number Rack
The number rack(also known as the Rekenrek) facilitates the natural development of students' number sense. Rows of movable, colored beads encourage learners to think in groups of fives and tens, helping them to explore and discover a variety of addition and subtraction strategies. Grades K-3.
The Number Line
Base Ten Pieces
Geoboards
