Mrs. Abrams’ Kindergarten News
Class news for Nov 28 to Dec 2
A note from Mrs. Abrams
I LOVE Love this time of year with kindergartners. I love to watch them light up when they "CAN DO IT"
At this age they will enter their world of writing at different levels. some students are ready to make their meaning know through words, but not every student reaches this milestone at the same time. Remember to encourage them to try their best,
I want them to always be "thinking about the story" and they may respond in a variety of ways. In kindergarten, you will have some that respond in drawings that are difficult to interpret at first, but as the year goes on , you will be amazed at the progress you will see.
We read several books this week to learn about The First Thanksgiving:
After reading The Littlest Pilgrim by Brandi Dougherty they were able to retell the beginning, middle and end of the story in pictures and words.
We also created a four square to show the characters, setting, problem and solution in the story Three Little Pilgrims.
As they are "think about our reading" they are learning to:
Visualize - create an image in their mind as they read.
Schema - everything you already know
Schema + new information = New Learning
Infer - use clues in the story to help them understand what's happening
Predict - take clues from the text and make a smart guess about what will happen in the story.
Connect - think about their experiences and what they know to make connections.
I love to watch them "read like a writer" and "write like a reader", because the more you read the better writer you become and the more you write the better reader you become.
When you DO good things...GOOD things happen, and as a Kindergarten teacher life doesn't get much better than this.
