Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood!

Habit 5 is one of the most important habits when communicating with others. It is about listening not only with your ears, but with your eyes as well. What is the person really saying when they are talking to you? What is their body language saying? What are their words saying? Knowing all of these components in their message will help you respond appropriately and allow you to express your thoughts and feelings on the subject effectively.

How have you or your leader practiced Habit 5 at home? Respond to mandi.mcbain@tlca-ar.com with your answer, Leader's name and grade level and they will receive a crazy sock pass to use this Friday!

Four Tips to Help Your Child Succeed at School

Parents, families, educators and communities—there’s no better partnership to assure that all students, pre-K to high school, have the support and resources they need to succeed in school and life.

The research shows that students tend to earn higher grades, have better attendance, are more motivated and less likely to drop out when their families are involved in their education.

Here are four tips for what parents can do outside the classroom to help their child succeed:

  1. Create a home environment that encourages learning and schoolwork. Establish a daily routine of mealtimes with time for homework, chores and bedtime.
  2. Reinforce learning at home and show your child the skills they’re learning are applicable to everyday life. For example, if your child is learning about measurements, solicit help with a recipe.
  3. Model the habits of a lifelong learner. Let your child see you reading, writing and using technology.
  4. Become an advocate. Sign up to speak to the school board about resources your child’s school and schools in general need to be successful.

What's your favorite thing about Winter Break?

After we get out on December 19th at NOON, I believe some of the best times I have with family and friends during Winter Break is sitting down watching a great holiday movie or listening to our favorite Christmas carols. Carol of the Bells is one of my favorite songs because it was one of my favorites when I sang in my HS Choir. I have great memories of that time and love to be silly and sing it to my children during the holidays. My favorite movie is Elf which my children and I adore! We also like to get out and explore our wonderful community! I am providing a links with Free things to do in DFW!

What are your favorite things to do with your family and friends over the break? Contact mandi.mcbain@tlca-ar.com and let me know. Your leader will receive a special candy cane from me! I can't wait to hear your favorites!
