Burchfield's Bulletin
December 4-8 (School Days 68-72)
Let me say before we begin...
A Note From Joy
WIG - Win and move on to the UIL Football State Semi FINALS
Lead Measures - Specific Plays
(New or updated plays that the other team didn't see coming.)
Lag Measures - Both teams had winning records
(Did I say my high school was in the running for a state title?)
Commitments - Team work; Encouraging messages to the players; Students listen to the coaches; Avoid penalties; Encourage each other don't let your teammates down; Remember what they have seen on film; Follow routes rehearsed; Be ready for whatever happens; Students will stay warmed up between plays
(Wow, the kicker never cooled off and never missed a kick)
(On a regular basis, commitments will consume about 20% of our energy.)
Whirlwind - Trip from Euless to Abilene and all the details that go along with that; Saturday Football; Family on the weekend
(The Whirlwind will consume about 80% of our energy.)
SCOREBOARD - Keeping everyone informed and compels everyone to stick to the plan; Quick story about the journey! (My Facebook posts were pics of the scoreboard.)
For the last few days, most of you have worked to plan for, create, and display your 4DX Scoreboard. I have really enjoyed the process of LEARNING about WHAT to display. I've also enjoyed watching you all challenge yourselves to define the framework for the 4DX process and then dig down to master the details. As you finish your displays,
Remember to Post:
Your GOAL (WIG)
Your SPECIFIC actions (LEAD MEASURES - "The teacher will...")
Your DATA (SCOREBOARD)
Mason Message
This week’s message is about being CREATIVE and I will use the NFL and two of the NFL’s greatest coaches as examples. Whether you like the Packers and Patriots or not, you cannot dismiss the fact they both have a rich history of success and winning. The Super Bowl trophy is called The Lombardi Trophy for crying out loud, the Packers have 13 World Titles and the Patriots have been to the Super Bowl 7 times and Bill Belichick won 5 of the 7! What you may not know is that both Vince Lombardi and Bill Belichick reached their success with some talent and a whole-lotta CREATIVITY. Vince Lombardi had approximately 6 plays in his playbook that could be manipulated a variety of ways. It was simple, highly-effective and never done before: Pass when you need to, run the ball effectively and often. He created the power sweep and using offensive linemen to pull and block down field. Completely unheard of in the NFL until he came along. Lombardi created many of the plays and schemes still used today almost 55 years later. His teachings have been used by almost every Super Bowl winning team since 1962. Bill Belichick, love him or hate him, has won 5 out of the 6 Super Bowls he has coached for the Patriots. Unlike Coach Lombardi, Belichick is a defensive coach and has been creative in using different players in a variety of positions. He does not believe a running back is just a running back or a linebacker cannot become a wide receiver. By planning or because of no choice due to player injury, he has successfully and creatively taken players out of their comfort zone and used them as needed to help the team be successful, even with a back-up quarterback. And he did so over and over again winning 5 out of the 6 Super Bowls the Patriots were in, including last years. You’ve heard me, Joy and other district personnel say this before, “If what you’ve always done in the classroom has been successful, then why are we at 50% on grade level?” Would Lombardi and Belichick have the success they earned if they stuck with the status quo? Neither team had a winning season before they took over as coaches and by thinking different, standing the status quo on it’s ear and being CREATIVE with their teams, they became the two most successful coaches in the history of the NFL.
How will you change the status quo? How will you be creative? How will you think differently with your lessons and activities? How will you win the Super Bowl in your classroom?
ATTENTION, ALL STAFF MEMBERS (2 Things)
Second, you may have noticed the monitor in the "Parent Lunch Nook" that I share pictures, announcements, and information about what is going on around campus. I am going to be adding pictures of YOU reading whatever you're reading currently. The book doesn't necessarily have to be a children's chapter book or picture book; however, I know some of you are reading/previewing books you're going to read to your class. My goal is for students and parents to see us as readers. Just attach a snapshot of yourself to an email or text (817-829-8963) to me (Joy.) When you finish the book and start something else, send another pic. You can be creative in the presentation.
By the way, I really appreciate Valerie's hard work and creativity with helping put the Google Slides together each week for the monitor. She's a great help!
ATTENTION TEACHERS IN CREATIVE CLASSROOMS
If you like it but want to create your own, have at it! Let's let folks know what they're entering when they enter your room.
Inspiring Art is Everywhere, Everywhere!
I appreciate how in classes throughout the building, we are not "arting" just because
we have to or even because we just want to.
We "art" because our students NEED us to.
Thanks for integrating academics into the arts and the arts into the academics.
That will be a factor in our success.
(Keep the Facebook posts coming. Parents love it!)
Please check out the writing and artwork in person!
