Principal's Message
June 7, 2020
These are difficult times!
Hello SME families, this is Mrs. Lewis. This Sunday Call comes as a message from my heart. As many of you know, my husband is black, and we have three bi-racial children. These past few weeks have been particularly challenging as we have taken on very difficult conversations and explain the “why’s” to all of the protests we are seeing on TV and in our neighborhood. I do not come to you with solutions but rather a promise. Like our superintendent stated, “we must do more as a school system, through our methods and actions, to ensure that every child and every person, regardless of their race or circumstance, will be lifted up.” I too make this promise to you! I will be working hard to ensure we have better systems of communication, a more diverse curriculum, and professional development for staff on cultural bias. Please continue to take the leap with me in having difficult, age-appropriate conversations with your children. We should not be color blind to race, religion, culture, and sexual orientation, but rather embrace difference as a starting place for finding similarities and understanding. You do not have to be a parent of black children to engage in this conversation, nor do you have to agree with everyone else’s beliefs. Today, please help me by coming together to teach kindness and acceptance!
Please continue to stay safe and healthy!
Bye, Bye!
