Mask Mandate Message from Dr. Ridley, Superintendent of Schools
Community Message: Wednesday, August 11, 2021
As most of you are aware, this past Friday, August 6, the Governor signed Executive Order 251, explicitly stating that everyone must wear a mask when they are inside a school. The Executive Order went into effect Monday of this week and will stay in place until revoked or revised. Therefore, moving forward, regardless of vaccination status, masks will be required by staff, students and visitors when inside any of our eight schools.
I understand that this is not the news many community members wanted to hear. However, as a public institution, we are bound to follow mandates set forth by Executive Orders as well as the regulations that govern our schools given that they are equal to law. If your child has difficulty wearing a mask, please contact his or her principal as we have many successful strategies available and will work with your son or daughter to conquer his or her concerns; additionally, please review the noted exceptions included in the governor’s announcement which has been posted to the district website. At this time, current mandates and regulations set forth by the Department of Education and the Governor and do not allow for a fully virtual learning option in the approaching school year. Therefore, we hope to see all of our students when school begins on September 8! Rest assured that the District plans to offer five full-days of in-person instruction with lunches being served.
Over the next week, I will be working with the district administrative team to fully understand how best to apply the mandates in this Executive Order and to finalize our opening plans for the 2021-2022 school year. In addition, we will be seeking solutions for mask breaks; additional outdoor activities and more learning spaces. These plans will be shared by way of a subsequent video message on or before Friday, August 27. If any additional information becomes available from the governor’s office, I will inform the community as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation and support during this continuing situation and the ongoing challenges that we, as educators, families and community, are all facing. Enjoy the rest of your summer; I hope everyone stays healthy, safe and we’ll see you soon enough. Thank you.
