Transitioning to 5 days in-person

March 11, 2021

An important update from Superintendent Ghysels

Dear Parents & Community Members,

We are busy behind the scenes, working to transition to offering five days of in-person instruction for our students. To make this happen, we must follow updated guidance from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued in mid-January.

We have a target date of transitioning to five days of in-person instruction on Monday, March 29! I emphasize that it is a target date (not set in stone) as there are some challenges we’re working through which I've shared below. We plan to start with a partial day schedule initially with the goal of moving to a full-day schedule. We will keep you updated each week with the status of transitioning on March 29, so you can plan accordingly for your family.

What has to happen at TTUSD to open for five days of instruction:

  • We need to know how many students opt for the five days of in-person instruction option.

Status: We are asking all families to complete one “enrollment form” per student to select the educational model they want for their child so we have headcounts for every class. More information and a link are below. Please submit your response by March 17, 2021.

  • We must redesign every classroom in the district to accommodate more students (twice the number of students under the hybrid model in our classrooms at a given time) and adhere to the 4 feet rule where each student is at least 4’ apart from the back of the chair to back of the chair. While this may sound simple, we have more than 280 classrooms across the district that must be redesigned.

Status: We conducted a full needs assessment for each school. Furniture is being rearranged and additional furniture (over 125 new desks) has been ordered. Once we receive the furniture, it must be assembled and moved into our schools.

  • Each classroom needs additional desk barriers to accommodate more students in-person. Status: Additional desk barriers have been ordered and must be installed in each classroom and this will be completed before March 29, 2021.

  • If Placer County is in the purple tier of CA’s color-coded COVID-19 tracking system, TTUSD staff must get tested weekly. If we are in the red tier (4-7 cases per 100,000) we don’t have to conduct weekly testing.

Status: We are in the purple tier. Placer County did have six consecutive days in the red tier last week but Monday was in the purple tier. In order to be in the red tier, we must have 14 days of cases in the 4-7 per 100,000 range, or lower. This is a community effort to move to red!

  • New bell schedules must be created for each school and new transportation routes.

Status: The new school schedules are complete. Please see the article below with the information for each school. Note, the new schedule will be partial days.

  • We have to negotiate the impacts of the working conditions regarding these schedules with our employee unions.

Status: This is underway and we don’t see this hindering our transition date.

  • Cleaning schedules for the schools must be changed.

Status: When we open for five days of instruction, deep cleans for our school sites will happen in the evenings instead of Wednesdays. Schedules for the custodians have been adjusted for the target date.

When we transition to five days of in-person instruction, families will have two options to choose from for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year:

For planning purposes, we need to know what you want for each of your children! We need all parents to complete this “enrollment form” for their child (one per student, please) by March 17, 2021, so our principals can plan accordingly. Check out this short video on what classrooms will look like.

Please note that we still have minimal home-to-school transportation due to extensive mitigation measures required because of COVID-19. Those students with a current bus pass will continue to have a seat on the bus, and we will have up to two per seat on each route. We are not able to provide transportation for any additional students at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause for some of our families.

Thank you for your partnership in your child’s education. We know it’s been a tough year for everyone, and we are so excited to transition back to five days of in-person instruction!

Stay well.

Carmen Ghysels
