There's Always Time to Read with your Children!

Contributed by Mr. Hopkins, SES Principal

I imagine that you are a lot like me... you get up early in the morning, get your kids dressed and fed, take them to school, and then go to work. At work, well, it's just that - work! (I'm sure we can all fill in the blank there.) Then, you come home to... more work! Dishes need to be washed, yard needs cut, and of course, your children have baseball practice tonight...again. If you are anything like me, you just want to sit down in your favorite pair of sweatpants and watch Netflix. Right when you think you have a few minutes to relax, it's time to get the kids in the bath and put them to bed. Of course, no bedtime is complete without reading a read-aloud with your little ones. Hopefully, you are like me when it comes to this part of the day - the best part of the day - reading to your children.

Each night, laying down next to your child and reading a book with them is so rewarding. You can give characters voices, point out silly things you see in pictures, and talk about experiences they have in their own lives that are just like what is taking place in the book. Possibly the thing I love most about reading with my children is when they read to me! Sometimes, I forget how much my kindergarten child is growing up. She is learning so much at school and each night, she amazes me with something new. How has your child wowed you with their reading lately?

Once the read-aloud is over, that is the time that I can get cozy on the couch and catch up on Netflix. Those 20 minutes I took to read with my children may possibly be the most important 20 minutes of my day. I am able to spend quality time with my children, expand their vocabulary, help them make personal connections, and simply be there for them. Am I a busy person? Yes. Am I too busy to read with my children? Absolutely not. I started off sharing that I imagine that you are a lot like me.... I hope reading to our children is something we have in common.
