PHIS 6th Grade
Weeks of April 24th and May 1st , 2017
English Language Arts
This week the students become the teachers while they help each other prepare for the upcoming Reading STAAR test. They have created a lesson, a game and a practice "STAAR test". This is the end of our final ELM project and, perhaps, our last room transformation. In two weeks the students will experience an unforgettable adventure that will have them "setting sail" for STAAR gold!
The STAAR Reading test will be on Tuesday, May 9th.
This will be the last week I am hosting tutoring, which is open to all, on Wednesdays from 7:15-7:35am and 3:00-3:30pm. Thank you for all you do and don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have.

Math
First of all, thank you so much for showering me with glue sticks! :) All of your donations have helped us out sooo much! I have an over abundance now, so we'll be set for the rest of the school year!
This week in math we covered mean, median, mode, range and box plots. Next week we will cover chapter 17 with dot plots, stem and leaf plots and histograms. Lots of information!
Remember that there is no school on Friday , April 14th!
The 6th grade math STAAR test is on Monday, May 8th. This date will be here before you know it! Each week before the STAAR test, your child will be getting a STAAR practice packet for weekly homework. This is given on Mondays and one page a night is due for the following day. There were many students who had to sit out for half of recess today because they didn't have it done. This will be a grade and they must show their work for full credit.
Science
We finished our space unit. It was fun learning about how gravity works and affects how much we weigh and how far we can jump on other planets. We saw some cool videos from the International Space Station and saw how crazy life is without much gravity! Ask your students about it!
We will begin our unit on Plate Tectonics. We will study mountain, volcanoes & earthquakes. We will also be learning more about the rock cycle!
Social Studies
We are still studying Asia. Your students are doing a slide show presentation on an Asian country to present on Thursday or Friday. Please ask them about what they are learning. They have found some really great things! I hope you can watch their slide show over the weekend.
Please let me know if you need anything. I am here for you and your student!!
