Jaya, my daughter, is in fourth grade and we are keeping her on a schedule. While she was able to choose her own activities over the traditional Spring Break days, we have now structured her days to include: 45 minutes of daily reading while providing a summary of each chapter. We have focused on math skills including counting money, practicing math facts, logic games, and reviewing concepts she has worked on in class. We have also encouraged viewing of kid-friendly documentaries. Some of her favorites include Growing Up in the Wild and Dancing with the Birds. Art lessons have consisted of watching and following along Mo Willems in his Lunch Doodles on Youtube. She has enjoyed drawing some of her favorite characters. We're getting out of the house for daily walks and exercise, and giving our cat, Jibby, lots of love and attention.
It is normal to feel anxious in uncertain times, so we have spent a lot of time talking with Jaya about things she enjoys and answering her questions. We are putting extra effort in to spending "distraction free" time with her. No phone, no TV, no distractions - just quality time loving and laughing.
Principals throughout the district have engaged in regular meetings using Microsoft Teams. The district has provided us with material to further our professional development; and we're keeping in regular communication with our staff to answer their questions and support.
Mr. Surprenant
How is everyone doing? Me? I am good. I miss the breakfast shift in the morning! I miss starting out my day with everyone!
I have been keeping busy. Besides drinking a lot more coffee, I have been helping my own children with their schoolwork. I have a son in college at UNI that is home taking his classes online and that homework is way too hard for me. I also have sons in 9th, 8th, and 7th grader that I have been able to help. We have been working some of their classes and we even had a PE class run out of our garage the other day.
We have made it outside to shoot some hoops and play catch with a baseball. Luckily we have been able to do some hitting as well. I have been able to walk around the neighborhood and actually go for some runs too, when the weather has been nice. I actually went for a walk the other day in the snow! That was fun! A lot of time has been spent playing Skip Bo and teaching everyone how to play cribbage. Bonus, these games have something to do with math! And since the weather has warmed up I have been able to get the grill out for some hamburgers and hotdogs! I have also started to read a book about leadership.
One last thing, since sports have basically been shut down, I have been able to relive the Chicago Cubs run to the World Series by re-watching all of their games to the World Series. Which, by the way, starts tonight! Game 1 of the 2016 World Series. Cannot wait to see them win it again.

Miss Seylar
Hello Hawk families! My name is Callie Seylar and I am a second grade teacher at Hanawalt. It has been hard being away from the kiddos for so long, but I am keeping myself busy.
Over spring break, I went to Fort Lauderdale, Florida with my fiance. We had to cut our trip short due to Corona, but we made the best of it (even with beaches being shut down the 2nd day we were there). I celebrated my birthday last week on Wednesday by relaxing by the pool.
Since getting back from Florida I have been organizing and cleaning my home. Likewise, I have made sure to walk everyday just to get out of the house. My fiance and I have also been preparing our home for our new puppy! He is a golden retriever puppy that we will be picking up on Saturday! We are trying to wrap our heads around having a little fluff ball running around. I have attached pictures of our trip to Florida and a picture of our puppy.
