Counselor's Corner - Chronic Absenteeism and Its Effects on Students
Dear Families,
Last week's Counselor's Corner promised additional responses for families who struggle with getting your student to school every day. Please view the ideas below for another point of view.
Your child - “I hate school.”
What you might think - "He’s overreacting."
You might be tempted to say, “I hate lots of things I have to do. That’s just life.”
What might be going on - Sometimes a specific bad experience or trouble with one aspect of school can cast a cloud over everything else.
Your appropriate response - “Something must be really challenging at school. I know there’s a lot that you like, so tell me what’s been happening.”
Get him to be as specific as possible, then work with the school to create a plan.
Remember, each day of teaching builds on the previous day's instruction. Learning will become harder if several days of instruction are missed. Recent research shows that frequent absences will often become a long-term habit for students. Opportunities for intervention and extra supports are missed when students are not at school consistently.
If you have questions about our attendance policies, please call our school office at 378-2250.
