Heaton Hotline 2023 Week 5, Term 1
We nurture and inspire every child to dream big.
Principal Message
Good afternoon,
Thank you to our entire community for coming out to our Welcome BBQ. We truly believe that our diverse community is at the heart of everything we do. Your combined support from home, along with our commitment to our vision of 'We nurture and inspire every child to dream big' is the perfect formula for why Heaton is so special.
Our staff thank you! You are a once in a lifetime community to work with! We know that! Thank you to everyone who was able to contribute to our Turkish / Syrian Earthquake donation.
I will be on leave from this Monday through to next Wednesday. Mr Chris Taylor will be relieving as Principal during this time and our systems will remain the same as usual.
Our Parent Teacher Interviews will take place during Week 8. We will let you know when bookings open in the Parent App soon. Families who speak English as a second language will have sessions with Mrs Ishinwe, Mr Al Muraibt and Mrs Ahmadi booked in during the same week.
Proud Principal,
Mr Hilton
Parent Support & Canteen
I have had a number of parents asking me about how they can support the school now that Covid restrictions are over. I have also had questions about our canteen. With the support of Sam, our prior P&C president we have ordered Mother's Day stall gifts. I have also been working with the high school to see if we can piggy-back off their canteen a few days a week. If you would like to be involved in a parent group to support our school, we are holding a meeting on Wednesday 8th March in the admin office at 3pm. We value your support and would love to hear your ideas on the day. I will provide a Zoom link for anyone who cannot attend in person.
Student Parliament, Multicultural Representatives and Student Aboriginal Voice to Parliament
We are preparing our students for a life of aspirational achievement once they leave Heaton, move through Callaghan College to Year 12 and on to university or whatever path into employment that suits them best. Our Student Parliament works towards achieving goals within the school and truly represents what our students need. We know diversity and inclusion is the key to success. Congratulations to our elected representatives for Semester 1. We can't wait to see how your combined Student Voice will shape our school in 2023.

Attendance Matters - 'Here Every Day, Ready On Time'
Well done to Obed, Neyayesh, Willow, Lennox and Sarah for being our 'Here Everyday, Ready On Time' attendance draw winners during Week 3. Londyn, Levi, Sophie and Dorika were our winners during Week 4.
1/2H had the best attendance on 94.44%. We are aiming to keep our classes at 95% or above when there is not bouts of sickness.
At the end of the year students above 95% for the year or at a rate of 100% go in the draw for a 50 dollar voucher and a 100 dollar voucher at Presentation Day.
Premier's Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge begins on the 27th of February and will continue until the 18th of August. During library lessons we will be reading books that will automatically be added onto students reading logs. We are encouraging students to use The Premier’s Reading Challenge to explore a wide variety of books and develop their passion for reading. Mrs Vitnell and Mrs Banks will be available to answer any questions and assist students who wish to add additional books to their reading logs.
Amazing Curriculum Work
The new Mathematics syllabus is being implemented into all K-2 classrooms. The teachers at Heaton Public School are utlising and contextualising the DoE Mathematics Units of work.
The new syllabus has a strong focus on developing mathematical language and reasoning.
Four days a week, the Year 1 students from K1D and K1A work with Miss Russell for Stage literacy and numeracy sessions. The Year 1 students are kicking goals in sharing their mathematical thinking and language. Here are some examples of the conversations had during a lesson.
Conversations overheard as students share counters into bowls: ' It will take too long if we share them one at a time.' Partner replied: 'Maybe we can count by 3's and 4's' to share them quickly?'
When asked by the teacher to explain their sharing of objects: 'We have one bowl that has more, if we shared them that would mean there wouldn't be enough (meaning if they shared them all the bowls would not be equal). There is only enough for half of them.' With that, the pair shared the counters to half of the bowls and paired those bowls with the bowls that had not had the additional counters added. As they poured the counters into one bowl a successful smile appeared on both faces. 'Now they are all equal!'
