California Healthy Kids Survey For 6th and 7th Graders
Your child is being asked to be a part of our school’s California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), sponsored by the California Department of Education. This is a very important survey that will help promote better health and well-being among our youth, improve the school learning environment, and combat problems such as drug abuse and violence. Your child does not have to take the survey. Participation is voluntary and requires your permission for 6th grade students and an opt out form for 7th graders.
- Survey Content. The survey gathers information on developmental supports provided to youth; school connectedness and barriers to learning, as well as behaviors such as physical activity and nutritional habits; alcohol, tobacco and other drug use; and school safety. You may examine the questionnaire HERE. The results from this survey are compiled into district- and county-level CHKS Reports. To view a copy of your district’s report, go to https://calschls.org/reports-data/search-lea-reports/ (Outside Source) and type in the district name.
- It is Voluntary. 6th grade students who, with your permission and 7th graders, who have not been opted out, agree to participate do not have to answer any questions they do not want to answer, and may stop taking the survey at any time.
- It is Anonymous. No names are recorded or attached to the survey forms or data. The results will be made available for analysis only under strict confidentiality controls.
- Administration. The survey will be administered during the month of December. It will take about one class period to complete (about 50 minutes) and will be administered in your child’s PE class.
- Potential Risks. There are no known risks of physical harm to your child. Risks of psychological or social harm are very small. None have been reported in 19 years of survey administration. In rare instances, some discomfort might be experienced from the questions. The school’s counseling services will be available to answer any personal questions that may materialize.
- For Further Information. The survey was developed by WestEd, a public, non-profit educational institution. If you have any questions about this survey, or about your rights, email Lisa Michel, Director of Teaching & Learning at lisamichel@ccusd.org.
7th Grade Parents: Please fill out the opt out form (English version HERE Spanish version HERE) if you do not want your child to take the survey by December 9.
6th Grade Parents: Please fill out the consent form by clicking the button below for your child to be a participant in the California Healthy Kids Survey by December 9.
Hanukkah Begins Sundown, Thursday 12/10/20
In 2020, Hanukkah begins at sundown on Thursday, Dec. 10 and lasts until sundown on Friday, Dec. 18.
What is Hanukkah?
Hanukkah, which is Hebrew for “dedication,” is the Festival of Lights.
It commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian Greek army, and the subsequent miracle of rededicating the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and restoring its menorah, or lamp.
The miracle of Hanukkah is that only one vial of oil was found with just enough oil to illuminate the Temple lamp for one day, and yet it lasted for eight full days.
How Do You Celebrate Hanukkah?
We celebrate Hanukkah at home by lighting the menorah (each night we light one additional candle to the number from the previous night), playing dreidel, and eating special foods unique to Hanukkah. Some people also sing Hanukkah songs or exchange gifts after lighting the menorah, which is also called a hanukkiah. Many people host and attend Hanukkah parties.
What Are Hanukkah Foods?
Many Hanukkah foods are deep-fried in oil, symbolizing the oil from the menorah used in the Temple. These include latkes, or potato pancakes, and jelly doughnuts. Other favorites include the Sephardic delicacy bimuelos and use, of course, applesauce as a latke topping. Chocolate gelt, a candy that gets its name from the Yiddish word for money, is another popular Hanukkah treat.
