Message From Principal Engdall

Greetings Shaw Montessori,
I am certain that our Holiday Tax Credit concerts brought each of you great joy! The power of our children to draw an audience is healthy and strong! I would estimate that 500 of you attended the Tuesday concert and 300 Thursday’s. Many of you had the pleasure of being here both evenings!
I want to thank Mr. Bonds for his incredible work on the vocal and instrumental music with our children and Ryan and Alyssa Cowen. Ryan and Alyssa, parents to Charlie and Dean engineered the incredible sound both evenings, served s’mores, and brought many “back of the house” items that were overlooked before performance day.
Please note that this week on 12/14, 12/15 and 12/16 we have an early release schedule to accommodate Parent/Teacher conferences. Your child’s teacher has most likely been in contact to schedule with you. If not, please feel free to email them and ask about your meeting time.
We are experiencing a high rate of absenteeism because of illness with our staff and children. Please remember that if your child is absent, you must call the front office line at 602-257-3914 to report their absence. This line is open 24 hours. Feel free to leave a message.
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Garden Update

Greetings!
Our holiday concerts were a great success! The students harvested from the garden and prepared salads on both nights. The salads contained carrots, lettuce, beets, radishes, green beans, and green onions. The Thursday night group finished all the salad! We also roasted marshmallows on the fire and made s’mores. The kids went bonkers over the s’mores. I am very surprised and relieved that nobody was burnt with a flaming marshmallow during this process. Thank you to all the 7th/8th graders and Leinbach students that helped prep for this event. It was a lot of fun.
I came back from vacation on Tuesday to find that our chicken coop had flooded! Our poor chickens looked like ducks in their flooded coop. Luckily, Andrews Plumbing came out and fixed the leak. The students brought in wheelbarrows of sand and hay. The chickens are enjoying the renovation. Pretty soon they will have some goat friends!
We will be selling bouquets and produce next Wednesday at pickup. Please bring your cash. Bouquets will be $5.00. If you return a vase, you get $1.00 off any purchase! See you then!
Here’s my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, eggshells, and bottle caps. You can leave them on the table outside the front office except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bin.
If you have any flagstone cuts or wood cuts, we will also take them. We will also accept any tool donations for the field garden and/or ODE.
Enjoy your weekend!
Mr. Moench

Chinese New Year is one of the most important holidays in China. Chinese New Year is to honor your family, your ancestors, and heavenly spirits to your house. Chinese New Year will remain important as a holiday in China. The Chinese New Year was based on an ancient Chinese calendar. Astronomical records show that the holiday existed at least as early as the 14th century B.C. That was about 3,400 years.
Every year an animal is celebrated. Next year is the Water Rabbit. Chinese New Year originated during the Shang Dynasty (1600 - 1046 BC). This holiday has ancient roots from China as an agricultural society. “It’d be the occasion to celebrate the harvest and worship the gods and ask for good harvests to come.” Explained Yong Chen.
Chinese New Year isn’t always on the same day. It depends on the lunar calendar. It begins during the new moon. Though, however, it falls between January 21st and February 21st.
So, do you celebrate Chinese New Year? It’s a cool event that comes every year on different dates!
