A Note from Mrs. Higgs
Our school choir, The Stott Singers, is a group of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students who volunteer their time outside of the school day. We meet for one hour, once a week and then students practice on their own memorizing music. We have several performances throughout the year where we sing for a variety of different audiences. Our obvious goal is to be a part of making beautiful music and sharing it with the people around us, but choir is so much more.
Being part of an ensemble like choir (or band and orchestra) encourages members to work cooperatively for a common goal, while still maintaining the importance of being strong as an individual. Every individual voice counts. We also learn the importance of hard work and perseverance, because what we sing isn't always easy.
Within the ensemble members learn to be better, stronger communicators. Because we have the strength of the ensemble we are able to counter natural fears of speaking/performing in front of a group. We also improve confidence through performance. We build community through our performances Christmas caroling in the neighborhood near Christmas time, performances at the area vocal festival and performances for Springwood Retirement Facility.
The literature that is chosen for the ensemble opens us each to new cultures, people, languages and styles of music that we might not ever have had without being a part of choir. This gives us a better understanding of the world around us.
Tracking each line of music and reading the lyrics (at the same time) also helps to improve reading skills
These are just some of the benefits that a group like The Stott Singers provides and are skills that each choir member will carry with them throughout their lives. We have just begun our second season of choir for this year. Because this is an extra-curricular group we are not funded by the district or the school. We are in need of new music for the choir to sing, as well as providing funds for those students who would like to participate, but cannot financially afford to do so. We rely entirely on the fees our members pay and any donations that we receive. If you would be willing to help us to purchase our new music and support this amazing group of kids, please go to the Stott Elementary website. Along the right hand side of the main screen you will see a little heart icon. Once you click that you will be taken to a donation site for Stott. Donations can also be made in the school office.
Thank you so much for your support!
Joey Higgs
