Story Contest Winner of "Santa and His Keys"..... Bailey Gustafson (Runners up: Nellis Andrews & Sofia Lara)
Where Did Santa Put His Keys?
One frosty day in the North Pole, Santa called an emergency meeting for all of his elves. They gathered in the toy factory eager to hear what Santa had to say.
“Hello my elves,” Saint Nick said, “Thank you for joining me today. I come bearing bad news. I am in trouble. I was testing out my new sleigh the other day and when I was done, I thought I put back the keys. But the problem is, I don’t know where I put them!"
The elves gasped.
“Have you looked in your pants pocket?” inquired Twinkle.
“What about your old sleigh?” asked Jingle.
“Have you asked Mrs. Claus?” added Holly.
“I checked all those places. I am really confused as to where I put my keys!”
Two days ago
Santa had just finished testing his new sleigh and had put his keys on the sleigh and left when a little penguin named Snowball decided that those keys would be a perfect addition to his snowman driving a car. So Snowball waddled up to the sleigh and picked up the keys with his flippers. Snowball didn’t know the keys were Santa’s though. If he had known they were Santa’s he would not have stolen them. He went over to where he built his snowman and put the keys around his snowman's finger. The snowman was far from Santa’s workshop so he didn’t look there.
The Elves Search
The elves looked everywhere for Santa’s keys. They searched in their homes. They searched in Santa’s house. They searched in the toy factory and in the reindeer houses. They even looked inside of the toys. Next they were going to look outside.
An Elf named Candy said “If we split into search parties things will go a lot faster don’t you think.”
“I will lead a group outside of Santa’s house.” said Jingles
“ I will lead one outside our houses.” said Twinkle.
“I can lead another one outside the toy factory.” said Holly.
”Alright I will lead the last one outside of the reindeer homes. Search everywhere.” Candy said.
That is exactly what they did. They searched on top of the snow and under the snow. They searched until it was nearly nightfall and they would have kept searching if Sant hadn’t come out and said “Alright go get some sleep you have done enough today.” “But sir, we haven’t found your keys yet.” said Holly. “It’s alright you tried your best now go get some sleep.” The elves went to bed but they didn’t really want to.
The Penguin Thief
The next day Snowball decided that his car driving snowman still needed something so he didn’t know what. He went searching around Santa’s village and found a coat and thought it was just perfect. The coat was actually Santa’s but he didn’t know that. He added the coat onto his snowman. He thought it looked just perfect.
Finding the Culprit
Snowball went back into town and heard Santa talking to his elves.
He said “My favorite coat was taken this morning and now I have to use a coat that is too small for me. I think someone might be trying to sabotage Christmas”
That is when the penguin realized that he had taken Santa’s coat, and now that he thought about it he figured the keys were probably Santa’s too.
He felt awful so he waddled up to Santa and in a small voice said “Mr. Santa, it was me who took your coat and keys but I didn’t realize they were yours at the time. I was not trying to sabotage Christmas I promise.”
“Then what were you doing?” Santa asked.
“Let me show you.” Snowball replied. Santa and the Elves followed Snowball up the mountain to where he had built the snowman driving a car.
Santa laughed “You were making a snowman.”
“Yes sir.” Snowball said. Santa was admiring Snowball’s work when Snowball said “Are you mad?”
“Of course not little penguin.” Santa replied. “What’s your name?”
“Snowball.” He said.
“What a lovely name” Santa said back. Snowball smiled he was so relieved that Santa wasn’t mad.

A History of New Year's Resolutions by Tyler Tryon
New Year’s Resolutions. You know, the promise you make to yourself at the beginning of a new year to change a bad habit, or perhaps accomplish a personal goal, or to simply improve your life and make this year better than the last? Well as it turns out, this tradition is well over 4000 years old! It is said that the first people to make New Year’s Resolutions and celebrate the beginning of a new year are the ancient Babylonians. However, instead of celebrating in January they celebrated in March, which was when they planted their crops. During this mid-March celebration, which was called Akitu and lasted 12 days, they either crowned a new king or re-pledged their loyalty to the current king. They would also make promises to their gods to pay any debts they had. If they kept their word, their gods would bestow favor on them for the coming year. If they didn’t keep their word, they would fall out of the gods’ favor, a place no one wanted to be. These promises are considered to be the first New Year’s Resolutions.

NFL Playoffs--by Alex Maldonado
Playoff Predictions and Recap
After 3 weeks of exciting playoff football, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs win their conferences. Who will win this matchup? Time will tell....
Super Wild Card Weekend
The weekend started off with the Bills advancing with a win over the colts by 3 points. After this Principal Noce's Seahawks fell short to the LA Rams by a 10 point deficit. I guess Russel Wilson cooked up a bitter tasting L, am I right Mrs. Noce? To end Saturday's action, Tom Brady led the Bucs to a win over the Washington Football Team.
Sunday Morning started off with a Ravens win over the Titans 20-13. After this the Bears and Saints game was aired on Nickelodeon Where they added fun additions to bring in younger audiences into sports. This weekend's biggest shocker was the Browns win over the Steelers. This game ended in the 1st Quarter after the Browns went up 28-0.
Divisional Round
On the NFC side The weekend started off with Aaron Rodgers and The Packers defeating the LA Rams. I know this was Principal Noce's favorite part of the weekend. On Sunday night the Buccaneers defeated the Saints 30-20, sending Drew Brees into retirement.
Now on the AFC side, The Bills sent the Ravens back home.
Ending the weekend, the Chiefs put an end to the Browns celebration, beating them 22-17.
What to do for the Super Bowl by Matias Del Moral
One of the most obvious things to do is being entertained by the creative commercial that are sure to make you laugh. Make a list of your favorites, but keep the list a secret, then have your friends and family share out after the game.
However this year might be a little different, it would still be awesome to cheer and even make some friendly bets with friends and family
Dress up in team pride, wear jerseys from the team your rooting for, put on some face paint, and maybe even eat some game food the same colors your team wears
Time for some games! A fun but challenging game is ring toss , you could make a DIY field goal that can be used to play a fun game of ring toss. Conveniently, you only need some spare copper pipes and a glue gun to imitate a field goal, and search that can fit around the pipes, and throw away!
Another fun but not as competitive game is judging commercials! Fans tend to judge players, let's switch it up and take it out on commercials!
Put on your own half time show! Sing, dance, or show off a talent!
Mini football toss! It's very fun, looks similar to a corn hole but it's vertically facing.
Lastly to play by yourself, you can do some drawings of helmets or a ball!
What's Cooking with Leslie Cruz Santiago

Buffalo Sauce:
My Recipe that you can use with anything!
Ingredients:
⅔ cup Frank’s Red Hot Sauce
½ cup unsalted butter
2 tablespoons white vinegar
½ teaspoon *Worcestershire sauce*
¼ teaspoon ~cayenne pepper~
⅛ teaspoon garlic powder
Salt to taste
*To make a vegetarian version of this sauce, swap out normal Worcestershire sauce (it has anchovies in it) for either a vegan Worcestershire sauce or substitute the amount needed with half lemon juice, half soy sauce, and a small pinch of granulated sugar.*
~You can always add more or less cayenne pepper depending on your spice preference~
Instructions:
Combine Frank’s Hot Sauce, butter, white vinegar, *Worcestershire sauce*, cayenne pepper, garlic powder into a small pan on low-medium heat
Whisk until it comes to a simmer and the butter is completely melted
Taste it (Be careful it will be hot!) add salt as needed
Let it cool completely so it will thicken, store in airtight container for up to a month in the fridge
Use on anything like chicken wings, cauliflower “wings”, or a dipping sauce and anything your heart desires!
Buffalo Cauliflower “Wings”
Recipe from Pinterest with revisions by me!
You can use the Buffalo Sauce above with this
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons coconut oil
¾ cup buffalo sauce
1 tablespoon garlic powder
2 teaspoon onion powder
⅛ teaspoon sea salt
A pinch of pepper
1 head of cauliflower
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 400℉
Melt the coconut oil and mix in the hot sauce, add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper, make sure to stir well!
Cut the cauliflower into pieces and place into a gallon plastic bag
Pour most of the hot sauce mixture into the bag with the cauliflower and shake the bag to coat it well
Check and make sure it is well coated, do not make it soggy
Place the cauliflower onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet, and spread the pieces out evenly. Bake for 25-35 minutes, bake for longer if you want it to be more crispy
Take out of your oven and serve
Extra Notes:
Don’t use frozen cauliflower, use fresh.
If your cauliflower is more soggy cook for longer up to 45-50 minute

How to Create a Vision Board by Ari Herrera
Vision Boards are a way to visually display what you want out of life. How can you make one? Well, one way is to create a poster that you can put pictures or words of your hopes goals and dreams all over it. By doing this, you can be reminded of what you want to achieve whenever you look at your vision board. This will help you get motivated to achieve your dreams.
You can be as creative as you want with a vision board since it’s yours. The main supply you need is a poster board (or cork-board) otherwise you can draw, clip magazines, write, or print pictures. The picture below, is the vision board I made. Feel free to use that as an example for yours. Happy Crafting!

A Tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. by Madison Barnes
Martin Luther King Jr. (Born Michael and later changed to Martin) was born on January 15,1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the second child of Martin Luther King Sr., a pastor, and Alberta Williams King, a former schoolteacher. He grew up in the city’s then, sweet Auburn Neighborhood with his older sister Christine, and younger brother, Alfred Daniel Williams. Martin Luther King was a Baptist minister and activist. He was a key role in American Civil Rights because he sought equality and human rights for African Americans, those who were not advantaged to the economy, and victims of injustice through peaceful protests.
On December 1st, 1955, Rosa Parks resisted to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus and was arrested. Following that event, Activists organized the Montgomery bus boycott and made a serious economic strain on the public transportation system and downtown business owners. Martin Luther King Jr. was the protest’ leader and official spokesman.
Martin Luther King Jr. is most famous and has a reputation for his famous “I have dream speech”. On August 28,1963 the “March on Washington” was a peaceful political rally to establish and let be known the injustices Black Americans go through that was organized by Martin Luther King as he worked with many Civil Rights and religious groups to help him organize the march.
That same day “The March On Washington” cultivated the famous “I have a dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The purpose of his speech was to share his thoughts on human equality and his visions on the future. “I have a dream that one day right there in Alabama little black boys and little black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed — we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”
Martin Luther King Jr. is a historical figure and fought for human rights of Black Americans. He has, and continues to make, a lasting impact on society.
Doorbell Surprise! Verrado Residents Kindness Challenge by Jaden Hale
In a time of isolation, it is more important than ever to connect with our neighbors in a positive way. I'm sure you are all familiar with the concept of ding dong ditching or trick or treating. But isn't it better to give back to our neighbors?
Instead of ringing the doorbell and running away, ring the doorbell and place a baked good, homemade, or store bought gift, then step back 6ft before they open the door. This is a great way to brighten someone's day! Hopefully, then in return we would hope that they pay the act forward with surprising someone else. Imagine the sense of community you would create. So, are you up for the challenge?
Feel free to take a picture of a surprise you leave for a neighbor (6 feet away of course), their reaction, or a distanced selfie to fain@lesd.k12.az.us. We look forward to seeing them and featuring some of them in our next edition!
