Stickers on Laptops & iPads
Later this month and through the first week of June, we will be collecting all iPads from Kindergarten and First grade students. In addition, laptops will be collected from Sixth grade students and any students that will not be attending Ebeling Elementary School next school year. Those designated groups will be asked to turn in the charger and the device. Any chargers that are not the original or to manufacturers specifications will not be accepted, and you will be charged the replacement cost.
Plan ahead! All UCS devices must be returned clean, and free of stickers. You will be charged a $10 fee if the district has to remove any stickers. You will also be charged if you did not buy insurance and the device is damaged.

We are so proud of Ebeling’s Social Studies Olympiad team! Theo Yamashita earned 3rd place for his artistic poster and Olivia Ambro earned 1st place for her storyboard poster. The students competed at the state level and shined!

The mission of Velocity Jr. is to provide relevant, hands on learning experiences in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M) to Preschool - sixth grade students of Utica Community Schools. Velocity Jr. instills 21st century skills derived from innovative, hands on curriculum through the utilization of differentiated learning modalities, while providing a stimulating, engaging, and collaborative community.

P-EBT Reconsideration Forms
Parents/guardians: please refer to the following notice regarding whether you are eligible for the Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) program and what factors are used in determining individual student eligibility for P-EBT. If a household feels they should be reconsidered for P-EBT benefits, they must fill out the reconsideration form (4A).
The qualifying events for reconsideration are:
- Must have Free or Reduced-Price Benefits AND enrolled in Virtual Academy for any part of the school year OR enrolled in-person school but missed 5 days or more due to COVID.
- The form is fillable, so parents can fill in Section 1 and Section 2. Then email PDF to Food Services at foodservice@uticak12.org
- School year benefits may only be paid through May 11, 2023 due to the end of the Public Health Emergency
- To be considered, all P-EBT Reconsideration forms must be received by MDHHS by June 30, 2023
- Parents can call the DHHS helpdesk at 833-905-0028, option 2, Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. with any questions or they can email at MDHHS-PEBT@michigan.gov.

Incoming Sixth Grade Specials Selection Process for 2023 - 2024
Sixth grade students will have the opportunity to rank their elective/special choices. Students will choose from art, band, media center, physical education or vocal music. This will allow support for a deeper, richer educational experience with our highly qualified staff. It also provides students with a semester elective process that prepares them for the transition to the junior high school schedule. Students will attend one course per semester daily for fifty minutes. Students will be assigned two different courses: one for the first semester and a different course for the second semester.
Parent letters with a link to select specials classes were emailed to each current 5th grade parent last Friday. Please give the email your full attention, returning your child's special/elective selection by the due date of Friday, May 26, 2023 . This will help ensure your child is placed in elective classes of their choice.

DRESS CODE REMINDER
Now that the weather is getting nicer, student are wearing their spring and summer clothes. Please speak with your child about school-appropriate dress. If they are not in line with the dress code, they may be given a warning reminding them of the code or they may have to call home to receive new clothes if the situation warrants. Our Utica Community Schools dress code is below:
Utica Community Schools takes pride in our students and encourages their development of good hygiene and grooming habits. Student dress and appearance that is neat and clean contribute to a positive school environment. Student appearance should not be disruptive to the educational process.
The following guidelines should be followed:
• Indecent, tattered or unsafe dress or footwear, or attire that calls undue attention to the wearer or has lettering or symbols that are disrespectful or derogatory are not allowed.
• Beach wear, low-cut tops, tank tops, sleeveless tops, muscle-shirts, see-through clothing, short skirts or shorts, tight clothing without proper coverage and clothing exposing the shoulders or mid-section are not allowed.
• Knee-length shorts and skirts are acceptable. Shoes must be worn.
• Outerwear – such as coats and hats – is not to be worn in school.
• Clothing that promotes illegal substances or drugs, illegal activities, violence, tobacco or alcohol is prohibited.
• Clothing or head coverings worn as group identifiers that promote a disruptive school climate are prohibited.
• Jewelry and accessories that may be deemed dangerous are prohibited.
Dear Parents:
With the last marking period of the school year upon us, it is important for students and their families to stay focused on learning. Feel free, as always, to call the school office or your child’s teacher with questions/concerns about your child’s progress.
One thing sure to be on everyone’s minds is the placement of students into next year’s classrooms. As we enter the final marking period, the teachers and I begin to plan for the following school year’s class assignments. The classroom teachers, learning center teachers, and I will collaborate to place your child in the most cohesive classroom. Your child's teacher knows your child as a learner and together we will design a stable classroom. As students are placed together into classroom groups, we look at many factors such as general academics, gender, reading abilities, sociability, and disciplinary situations to create a well-balanced classroom. Once classroom groups are designed, that is when a teacher is assigned to that group of students. If teacher requests are made, your child would have to be removed from that well-balanced classroom and placed into another (causing factors to become unbalanced); furthermore, another student may have to be removed from that class and moved out into a different grouping for no other reason than a request by another family.
Staffing changes and grade level assignments also play a role in expectations for your child. Quite often in the Spring, parents (with their child at their side) will say to me, “their brother had Mrs. XYZ, and we loved her. They are really looking forward to having Mrs. XYZ next year!” Please refrain from doing this, as it sets up the unrealistic expectation that teachers will be assigned based on previous siblings’ teachers, and results in initial disappointment for your child when things do not go according to your plan.
Classroom placement is an extremely long and arduous process each year that is well thought out by your child’s current teacher and other staff. I am asking you not to request a particular teacher for your child as I feel every teacher in the building is as equal as his/her colleague. I am not able to honor specific teacher requests as it is extremely difficult to keep the balance needed throughout each grade level. Thank you in advance for your support and trust in this area.

A great big THANK YOU goes out to your PTA Board Members this year! (Heather Joyce - President, Hoi Lee, Vice-President, Ashley Gittler - Secretary, and Jason Spina - Treasurer). Many Board Members have been representing Ebeling parents for several years! With their work and guidance, families and students were able to enjoy tons of PTA sponsored activities and events this school year!
Next year, there are a few changes to your PTA Board, as we welcome a new secretary, Kristina Hughes, welcome Ashley Gittler in to position of President for a two-year term.
REMINDERS AND REPEATS FROM PREVIOUS ISSUES OF THE EAGLE NEWS:
HANDBOOK/POLICY REMINDER:
Possession or use of cell phones or other electronic communications devices (ECDs) by elementary students is prohibited at any time while in school or in a district vehicle unless permission has been given by an administrator – this includes text messaging and camera usage.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
If your child is going to be absent call 586-797-4799 and leave a message on the 24-hour automated absence line. Any absences not called in to the office will be marked as 'unexcused' on student attendance records.
Your child will be excused from class for illness, bereavement, recognized religious holidays and medical or dental treatment that cannot be scheduled after school or on weekends.
Your child is responsible for makeup work. Homework requests may be made for an absence of two or more days in the case of both excused and pre-excused absences. Homework requests require 24 hours to process.
VACATION POLICY
Absence for family travel during scheduled school days is discouraged.
However, should family travel be necessary, parents must submit a written request to the Ebeling office for Principal approval of a pre-excused absence at least one week in advance. Vacation days in excess of 10 days per school year will not be approved.
Arrangements to complete classroom assignments can be made with the teacher.
You can arrange for home study through the school principal should your child be absent from school for an extended period due to physical disability or illness.
LATE ARRIVAL
If a student arrives late to school, the parent must accompany the student into the office, and the student must be signed in before he or she can go to class.
Truancy officials will be contacted in the event of a student having excessive tardies or absences.
SCHOOL PROPERTY REMINDERS:
NO PETS
Utica Community Schools has a no pet policy on school property.
OUTDOOR LEARNING
Please remain off school play areas and blacktop until 3:05 PM. Outdoor activities are scheduled daily until 3:00 PM.
NO SMOKING
The use of tobacco products on school property is prohibited in Michigan.
SCHOOL VISITORS:
We are asking for your assistance to ensure that our security procedures during the school day are effective. As many of you know, our school has a security camera, intercom, and buzzer at the front main entrance for use during the school day. To help us assist you when you would like to enter the school:
1. Please press the buzzer to speak with someone in the office
2. You will be asked to state your name and reason for visiting
3. You will be asked to show your photo ID into the security camera above the outside door
4. Office staff will then be able to buzz you inside
5. All visitors must immediately register in the office
In addition, we are asking you to not let any visitors in the door as you enter (and they come up behind you) or as you exit the building.
The teachers and staff are committed to student safety and security and we would like to thank you for your assistance in helping keep the students of Ebeling safe.
