I'm very excited to welcome Junior Achievement back into my classroom again this year. JA is a program that utilizes volunteers from local businesses to teach young students about the community. We will be welcoming a volunteer from Schrieber Foods on April 7. She will be in the classroom conducting lessons about the community once a week for five weeks. Students will learn about how a community works, taxes, decision making and much more.
Soon after we return from Spring break we will adding some new members to our class. It will be more like 25 new members! We will be starting our Life Cycle of the Butterfly unit early in the month. This is by far the favorite unit for the second graders and so very much fun to teach. Each student will be getting a Painted Lady caterpillar to observe as it goes through its life cycle, transforming into a butterfly. I'm sure you will be hearing lots about this unit once we begin!
With the arrival of spring and nice weather, hopefully, second graders need to remember to make sure they are continuing to read at least 20 minutes a night. They also need to practice their math facts at least 3 times a week to maintain speed and accuracy. Each student's xtramath information was given out at conferences. If the information has been misplaced let me know and I'll see that your child brings it home. There are also many practice sites on the district website. Go to the Library and then to Elementary Digs.
Lastly thank you so very much for all the kind thoughts, prayers and cards following my mom's unexpected passing. The cards made by the students were so heart warming to read. They brought both tears and smiles to my face. What a wonderful, compassionate group of children I have the honor to spend my days with.
