The Bee's Knees
February Newsletter 2021
Message From Mr.G
Registration for the coming school year is normally held each February, and this year is no exception. As is customary, we have a two week "re-enrollment" period open only to families that currently have a student enrolled and their younger siblings that would be attending next year for the first time. Re-enrollment opens next Monday, Feb 8 at 8:00. This two week re-enrollment period provides our currently enrolled families ample time to ensure their child has a spot next year. Parents that are re-enrolling should feel no pressure to be at Barfield at 7:59 AM Monday morning. So long as you register before February 22 your child will have a spot next year! February 22 is the first day of open enrollment. Normally by the end of that day we are full and families are placed on a wait list, which we always regret! One difference this year is that we will offer families the option to enroll in our Virtual Academy. We have had a gradual decline in the number of families that have opted into the Virtual Academy. Whether or not we will have the Virtual Academy for the 21-22 school year is completely dependent on the number of families that select that option.
We are all doing our best to make this school year feel as normal as possible. Classrooms will of course have Valentine parties this year. As has been the case all year, parents and guardians will not be able to attend. Often times students exchange Valentine treats. Students will not be permitted to eat any of the treats given to them by their classmates at school. We will send them home in your child's backpack for you to determine which they can have. We have a strict policy regarding food, essentially we do not allow any outside food into the classroom. So please do not send cupcakes or cookies to your child's teacher. We have this policy because so many students have allergies and we do not want to take any unnecessary risks. We will be providing students special treat on the day of their Valentine party so will be sucking all of the fun out of the day! We will carry on and make each day as fun and normal as possible.

Some Facts About Head Lice
Where children are present and playing, there is always the possibility of the presence of head lice (pediculus humanus capitis), which means there is a potential for lice at school.
The WSD has aligned nurse practices with both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses and we ask that parents keep the following information in mind:
Lice are not a disease.
Lice do not reflect unsanitary homes or students.
Lice are absolutely an inconvenience
By detecting lice early, both parents and nurses can get ahead in the process
If you have a concern that lice are present in your child’s school or if your child may have come in contact with another person with lice, check him/her frequently and let your school nurse know about the exposure in an effort to catch it before it gets out of hand.
Listed below are links to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses. There is also a video on what to look for when assessing if your child has head lice.
Please contact your school nurse with any questions or concerns about your own child.
Staff Spotlight- Amber Whyte, Nurse
I started my career in the medical field in 2005 at Missouri Baptist Medical Center on the Medical / Oncology unit working as a nurse assistant. I have always wanted to work in pediatrics so I transferred to St. Louis Children’s Hospital to work in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. I worked there from 2007 to 2018 as both a patient care technician and a nurse. I decided to make a change and came to Barfield in August 2018. Barfield has given me the opportunity to meet some amazing coworkers and interact with some awesome kids!
My husband and I started dating in May 2002. We went all four years of high school together but didn’t start dating until we graduated. We were married in November of 2015. We are expecting our first child in June 2021 and can't wait to be parents. We also have two pups that we rescued- Nash and Penny.
We love to spend our time watching the St. Louis Blues and Cardinals games or binging a new show. We also love to spend time with our families, especially our nieces and nephews that keep us busy.
