  • ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a medical condition that affects how well someone can sit still, focus, and pay attention. In the brain, what makes you focus is dopamine which is a chemical released by nerve cells to send signals to other nerve cells. With ADHD your brain does not produce enough dopamine.

How the body system works when it is working normally and how the body system is affected by ADHD.

The brain usually has a normal output of dopamine and norepinephrine. In a person with ADHD the brain lacks the the output of dopamine and norepinephrine. This means that it will make it harder to focus for a person with ADHD.

Target population

During childhood, ADHD may get in the way of academic and social performance. For adults with ADHD, the disorder can interfere with work and personal relationships. ADHD is more common in youth but some adults can still have ADHD. ADHD can be diagnosed with both genders male or female.

Onset-How does this condition arise?

The condition of ADHD Doctors don't know the exact cause of ADHD. “Research shows that ADHD is genetic and that it may be inherited in most cases.”

Diagnosis

  • “zoning out” without realizing it

  • difficulty paying attention or focusing

  • struggling to complete tasks

  • tendency to overlook details

  • poor listening skill

  • hard time remembering conversations and following directions

Signs and Symptoms

People with ADHD often act and think a little differently than most people. They may get distracted easily. They may feel bored a lot, lose things, say or do whatever is on their mind without thinking, and interrupt when other people are talking (impulsive).

Treatment for this disease/condition

“Most experts agree that ADHD medicines are safe and work well.” Medicines can help people with ADHD concentrate and focus better and be less hyperactive and impulsive. ADHD medications work by increasing the levels of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters help send messages between nerve cells in the brain.

Prognosis

A person with ADHD Has the same lifespan as anyone else. People with ADHD will find strategies to cope with ADHD. Some people can't cope with ADHD and have to stay on medication for the rest of their life.
