Peek at the Week
Mrs. Bennett's First Grade News, Week 7 (October 3-7)
A Note From the Teacher
On Friday, we traced and cut out bodies from paper. We glued the different organs in the correct location after two weeks of learning about the major organs. Check out my class Facebook page to see the great "I Wonder" questions! We will be celebrating the marriage of the letters "Q" and "U" to make words forever next Friday! If you would like to volunteer to make a wedding cake for "Q" and "U" next Friday, please let me know. Thanks for your continued support! I have the best students and parents!!!! I have been sending books home in bags or blue folders. Please read those and keep inside the backpack. If the same books come home, your child can read them again. I am not always able to meet with groups due to assessments. The RazKids passwords are stapled in the Panther Folder. This is a great resource to find just right books! Some of the levels are not exactly the same as the levels we use in class so I adjusted that on the website. I'll go over this more during parent conferences.

Reader's Workshop
We will add even more tools our tool box of reading strategies this week in Reader's Workshop. We will review stretchy snake, eagle eye and chunky monkey. I will introduce flippy dolphin. This is where we flip the vowel sound from short to long to see if the word makes sense. We will practice asking questions such as does it make sense and does it sound right.
Writer's Workshop
We will begin a unit on pattern books. We will read many pattern books to help students write with the focus being on meaning. Students will learn that pattern books are not just books with repeating words but that they communicate meaning. Students will learn to develop an authentic purpose for writing and expand our classroom library with the books they write.
Literacy Stations
Our stations this week will focus on poetry, characters, writing complete sentences and punctuation. Reading groups will continue this week.
Math Workshop
We will continue our study of fractions this week. Students will learn number combinations to 10. We will review counting backwards and subitizing. Please practice this with your child any chance you get. Give them a number between 1 and 120 and have them count backwards from that number. This is a difficult concept to master at this age. Another skill to practice is to give your child a number and have them quickly tell you the number before or after.
