A Word from the Guidance Team
As we near the end of the school year, we encourage our students to finish the year off strong. At this point, seniors should be finalizing their post-graduation plans and preparing for their transition out of RHS. If any senior still needs assistance with this process they are encouraged to seek support from the Guidance Office. As we close out the school year, we are very encouraged by this year's junior class as they are working diligently to meet state testing requirements. The Guidance Office will be open this summer to aid students by offering the Accuplacer on four different dates, a great opportunity for underclassmen to meet their requirements prior to the start of a new year. Additionally, the office will be open for schedule adjustments, to attain summer assignments, and for college planning. The counselor hours list will be posted on www.rahway.net at the conclusion of the school year.
Student Success: Senior Awards
On June 2nd, dozens of senior students will be awarded scholarships totaling more than $30,000. This event is made possible thanks to the generosity of organizations and individuals in the local community. This special night serves as a culminating celebration to seniors for their dedication and hard-work during their time at RHS. All senior students are eligible to apply for the coveted scholarship awards. To increase their chances of selection, students are encouraged to work hard in school, participate in school run clubs/sports/activities, and to give back to their community. All seniors who have submitted applications for scholarship awards are required to attend this exciting event.
Opportunities for Students: College Fly-ins & Diversity Weekends
Many colleges offer fly-ins and diversity weekend visits to students. These programs are designed to get students to campus who may not otherwise have the opportunity to do so. This past fall, several students participated in these programs visiting Barnard College and Hamilton Colleges (two of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation!). Money Matters: Starting the Scholarship Search
Often when counselors meet with students and families for junior meetings, a common question is posed, "When can my child begin apply for scholarships?" The answer, "as soon as possible." Though many local scholarships are only available to senior students, students may begin visiting websites for scholarships as early as freshman year. The resources listed below are a great starting point for those looking for assistance with financing their college education.
Higher Education: Test Prep
Khan Academy, a popular educational tutoring resource has teamed up with the College Board to provide free individualized test prep to students preparing to take the SAT. In order to benefit from this resource, students will need to link their PSAT scores to their Khan Academy account by following the steps below:
- Go to satpractice.org and log-in (or create) your Khan Academy account
- When prompted, agree to link your Khan Academy and College Board accounts
- Sign-in to create your College Board account and hit "send" to send your scores
- Begin practicing at satpractice.org
- Seek a guidance counselor if assistance is needed
